I found something positive about Parkinsons...unfortunately it is a bit obscure (Durian)

Mostly I have stayed away from Durian (the fruit).

FROM WIKIPEDIA: The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as rotten onions, turpentine, and raw sewage.

Since my sense of smell is impaired, I really enjoyed the moon cakes (Durian flavor) that I bought at our local Cambodian supermarket. They were super good!

Now may be your time for Durian!

Have you tried Mannitol to see if it improves your sense of smell (and other Parkinson's symptoms)?

Thanks for the suggestion. Are there foods that one should eat containing mannitol or would I have to take it like a drug? What a surprising chemical! I will have to ask the neurologist as well next visit. My Dr. is very cool.

Actually mushrooms and cauliflower contain some quantities of it. But for me about 4 grams in a cup of coffee I find helps. It has also helped many others on this forum. It is a sugar substitute, which you can buy online but too much can give you diarrhea.

alexask,

I was wondering a few things about your use of mannitol. Do you take 4 grams as your total dose per day? What benefits do you attribute specifically to mannitol? Do you think there are any drawbacks to mannitol use? How much do you weigh as I have heard that the dose is based on your weight?

Thank you!
