Does novacaine interact badly with Parkinson's drugs ? I need dental work done..

I currently take Sinemet, gabapentin and clonopin on a daily basis. Please post any side effects experienced when mixing novacaine with these drugs. I propose to take extra gabapentin and clonopin for the procedure so as not to move about, plus whatever novacaine the dentist uses.

I will ask the dentist directly about the risk, but he may not have had much experience with Parkinson's patients...

I have no known allergies to novacainebut of course I hadn't yet been diagnosed with the disease, it was many years ago.

The dentist should know.

Novocaine has a stimulant for wearing off sooner, which exasperates tremor. Their is an alternative which last longer but wont affect tremor, I can't remember the name but your dentist will know.

The stimulant, epinephrine, constricts blood vessels and prolongs the anesthesia. Local anesthetic without epinephrine wears off more quickly. Neither should have a negative effect on PD symptoms as the effects are mainly confined to the injection site, unlike sedation anesthesia.

Thanks very much that's reassuring.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I had four crowns and two teeth replaced this past year. The biggest problem I had was it left me "dumb" for a week or more after the novacaine. When I mentioned this to the dentist, he acted surprised and said thanks for mentioning that. Then he said it was no big deal and used a different kind that worked better. So be sure to talk to yor dentist. Lots of luck.

I had two wisdom teeth taken out last month with Novocain with no ill effects.

Practiced anesthesia for 30 years. I know the chemistry. Should not bother you. You can ask them to go without the epinephrine if you want . Usually just stays in the gum tissue but if you absorb it quickly It May feel like speed . Pretty rare occurrence but I have had a couple of patients have the heart race for a few minutes. Not uncomfortably though . The epinephrine Vasoconstricts the area so that the block lasts longer. Depends on how long your case is.

I have always wanted to ask someone who may know... when I take epinephrine, my heart beats slower and pounds very hard in my chest (I later came to find it raises my blood pressure) and I feel lethargic. I always have to ask the dentist for no epinephrine. I take amino acid therapy (large doses of mucuna among other things) and have this same side effect daily, though to a lesser degree. So, I think dopamine must raise epinephrine levels in the body? Is this an allergy or am I just weird?

I had Novocain this morning for a crown and came to this site to see about reactions. I have had brain fog ever since. Very odd. I’m in relatively good health for a parki so this was a shock. I drove myself home but should not have been on the road. In the past, I had surgery, and had a major brain fog situation afterward for about a month. I didn’t even think I might have the same problem with Novacain. Learning experience…
