I`m new here. a few years ago I had a small stroke which has resulted in Parkinsons`s like sympton`s. in particular freezing is the main problem. to overcome the freezing, I have just realised that using a metronome with beats set to about 85 / minute, I am really quite shocked by he results. has anyone else had any experience of this problem and possible solution.

Ben

We need, I believe, the prefrontal cortex to instigate movement, which in Parkinsons can be faulty. Music (possibly therefore metronomic beats) by passes the prefrontal cortex and appeals to a functioning area of the brain.
Hi bensan. This is very interesting. What you have said here is exactly what I have been preaching for years. We have to consciously control our walking! The moment you use the metronome you are concentrating on moving your feet or legs. That is what you have to do to overcome all the movement problems of Pd. CONCENTRATE ON WHAT YOUR BODY IS TRYING TO DO! It is not ROCKET SCIENCE!
It's fun to see everyone interpreting this differently, depending on their particular viewpoint. Perhaps they are all partly true. My own view is that listening to music with a good 80-85 beats per second rythm stimulates and therefore synchronizes the various parts of the brain that aren't synchronizing naturally. Breathing through the nose while exercising has also been shown to synchronize the various sections of the brain.
