I have been attending a NIA class for a couple of years and find it enjoyable and beneficial. Today I came across this article in the American Academy of Neurology journal explaining the benefits for PwP.

Never heard of this before. Sounds interesting.

Im curious, do you knowwhere the name Nia comes from?

I think it originally stood for non impact aerobics, but evolved into a category known as mind-body fitness.

I have done well in a martial arts program (shou shu) once I got a doctor that put me on enough meds to be functional. I get cardio, strength and a lot of the paying attention to body movements. I've been doing it about 6 months now and I've definitely gotten stronger and balance improvement. Plus the social aspect is really good.

I also like the social aspect of a class. NIA is also very non judgemental and can be done at different levels. I have also found it quite liberating especially the voice exercise options.

‘Schulman noticed that patients who used the treadmill only improved their cardiovascular strength but not muscle strength, and that those who used weights improved their muscle strength but not their cardiovascular strength’. Whoever Schulman is, they ain’t gonna win the Nobel with this one I’m afraid!🤭

“Lisa Shulman, M.D., professor of neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, director of the Maryland Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center, and Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, has studied the positive effects of exercise on people with PD. For example, she recently completed a study comparing treadmill walking to resistance exercise (using weights) in people with PD. “
