Today's research. Tea anyone?

I posted this in the Ataxia UK forum because of the links to SCA that I found, but I was asked to repost here so . . . no prob :D In terms of relevance to Parkinson's I will just say that alpha-syn is a "misfolded protein" so there may be a commonality.

I began this morning by reading this paper which is a summary of current research on treatments for SCAs and Huntington's Disease:

Protein Misfolding and Aggregation as a Therapeutic Target for Polyglutamine Diseases

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

-

-

Buried in the paper is this paragraph:

-

-

"Wanker’s group also found that epigallocatechingallate (EGCG), a green tea polyphenol, modulates misfolding and oligomerization of the expanded polyQ proteins, resulting in efficient suppression of polyQ aggregation in vitro [79]. EGCG suppressed aggregation formation of the polyQ proteins and polyQ-induced cytotoxicity in HD models of yeast and Drosophila [79], and the SCA3 model of C. elegans."

-

-

I won't bother linking to that paper, but turns out there are a couple studies that showed Green Tea Extract helps eliminate misfolded proteins and ameliorates symptoms of SCA3 in flies.

_

-

So the obvious next questions were: Is green tea extract safe? Yes.

ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/htdoc...

-

-

And, does eating it end up affecting plasma levels: Yes.

academic.oup.com/ajcn/artic...

-

-

And lastly does it actually cross the BBB? Maybe:

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/169...

-

-

Long story short I ordered some Green Tea Extract for myself :D

I really appreciate it that you post extended commentary rather than just a link and letting the reader fend for his or herself

Interesting! EGCG Flavonols are being studied in MSA disease in a clinical trial.

The PROMESA-protocol: progression rate of multiple system atrophy under EGCG supplementation as anti-aggregation-approach.

Treatment with 800 mg - 1200 mg EGCG as putative neuroprotective agent

"we set out to evaluate the safety, tolerability and a potential disease-modifying effect of Epigallocatechin-gallate in patients with MSA after 48 weeks of treatment. ..... a total of 86 patients will be recruited in this multicentre study. These data provide a solid rationale to investigate whether supplementation of Epigallocatechin-gallate can delay the progression of the MSA-related disability."

I use matcha green tea powder. I like the idea of consuming the green tea powder in its' natural form rather than an extract. This is not green tea leaves in a bag. It is the actual green leaf powdered. You mix it in cup of hot water if preferred. I like to mix a tsp in about a quarter oz of hot water to moisten it and then I add a cup of orange juice and stir. I think this would be a fine way to take your morning meds.

You can get this at any grocery store.

Thank you sharron2 - I think your suggestion is a useful tip on how best to rehydrate when a little bit unsure of what's going to be helpful to drink during the day.

You shouldn't use green tea to hydrate because it is a mild diuretic. Also drinking 2 cups a day is a super idea because people who did that were shown to have later onset of PD. 😁

another way to get the Matcha tea powder regularly is to mix it with the Mucuna Pruriens powder and some vitamin C and fill double 00 capsules. I do it for my husband all the time.

Hi, I use the plain Mucuna powder, not concentrated or an extract. I put it in a small round bowl, like dessert dish, leave room to add a teaspoon of Matcha tea and a teaspoon of vitamin C powder, level teaspoon of cayenne powder and then fill double 0 capsules (I really stuff them) with this, he takes 2-3 every 4-5 hours. If you open the empty capsules and bring them together in the powder they fill very well. It is fast. Many times when I buy supplements in capsules you notice they have empty space in there. With this method no problem. He also takes Selegeline morning and noon which helps with the Dopamine not leaving his system as soon as it would otherwise. So far he is not interested in taking the other drugs like levodopa/carbidopa. Been diagnosed about 3 years now. He does a lot of work around the house. We heat with wood. Keep chickens. He keeps the fire going in our large shop also since someone else works there. Does gardening in summer. We also started the Thiamine HCL , working up to the 8 grams but have not gotten there yet. He also takes a good Jigsaw B-complex. I hope this is of help to you.
