Psychosis from sinemet?: Anyone relate to... - Cure Parkinson's
Psychosis from sinemet?
This study muddies the waters by labeling impulse control disorder (ICD*) as psychosis. Psychosis is defined as "an abnormal condition of the mind that involves a loss of contact with reality". ICD is characterized by compulsion, not loss of contact with reality. So the psychosis label is not even true for ICD. Therefore this study should not even have been published with the terminology they have used.
*They also included Dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) which is a form of ICD.
Inappropriate terminology aside , this study examined the correlation between ICD and dyskinesias. It is well-known that dyskinesias are a result of levodopa type medication. However, no examination was made of whether patients were also taking dopamine agonists. Therefore no conclusion can be drawn from the study as to the association between ICD and levodopa medication usage.
Let us take a look at a study that did examine the relationship between medication and ICD, here: Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson DiseaseA Cross-Sectional Study of 3090 Patients at jamanetwork.com/journals/ja....
“Impulse control disorders were more common in patients treated with a dopamine agonist than in patients not taking a dopamine agonist (17.1% vs 6.9%; odds ratio [OR], 2.72;… Conclusions Dopamine agonist treatment in PD is associated with 2- to 3.5-fold increased odds of having an ICD. This association represents a drug class relationship across ICDs”.
As to the relationship between ICDs and levodopa medication the study finds: “An ICD was present in 17.7% of patients taking both a dopamine agonist and levodopa, 14.0% taking a dopamine agonist without levodopa, and 7.2% taking levodopa without a dopamine agonist. On multivariate analysis, the odds of having an ICD was higher in patients treated with a dopamine agonist than in levodopa-treated patients not taking a dopamine agonist (OR, 2.60; 95% CI, 1.97-3.43; P < .001). The combination of dopamine agonist and levodopa use, compared with dopamine agonist use alone, increased the odds of having an ICD (OR, 1.42…”
Levodopa causes ICD’s on some level in every patient that takes it
Most patients have no idea that they are being impulsive
And WE ALL have DDS as well
It’s how our body reacts to unnatural dopamine
I will take the foregoing carefully done study as well as my own experience over your unsupported claims. It may be true in your experience but that does not make it true for everyone.
Your right
My claims are unsupported
This is just what I believe
Not just from my own personal experience
I’ve been friends with hundreds of pwp and I’ve connected with thousands more over the last 3 years and EVERY one of them showed abnormal impulsive behavior when taking dopaminergic medications
However
Most of them are not impulsive enough to affect their daily lives in any significant way
It’s the unbalance that the medication causes that happens in ANYONE that takes it
If a medication helps with a persons Parkinson’s symptoms than it WILL also cause behavior changes
" I’ve connected with thousands more over the last 3 years and EVERY one of them showed abnormal impulsive behavior when taking dopaminergic medications "
Please kindly explain how it is you have connected with these thousands of Parkinson's patients and how you have been able to determine that every one of them has shown abnormal impulsive behavior when taking dopaminergic medications, even though it does not affect their daily lives in any significant way.
Social media
It’s a huge trigger for impulsive behavior
Whenever a pwp would ask if they should start taking medications since they were recently dx’d
That person never logs back in or does so rarely
But pwp on Meds are constantly logging in
That’s just one of many impulsive behaviors I’ve observed
So I am supposed to believe you have systematically observed the social media login behavior of thousands of PWP knowing which ones were on medication and which were not. Uh-huh.
There’s nothing “systematic” about my observations
It’s just common sense really
What dopamine agonist are u on if u don’t mind me asking?
Cumpulsive behavior is just as prevalent as impulsive behavior
Same with obsessive and risk taking behavior
It's all under the dopamine umbrella
As is motor control
If you are having issues with motor control symptoms than ur having issues with behavioral symptoms as well
Dopamine controls all of it all the time
It’s not like sinemet only medicates a pwp’s movement
It medicates behavior as well
The problem is that nothing is wrong with a pwp behavior Aside from depression that is also a symptom of Parkinsons
So sinemet medicates too much in a way
And that causes unbalance in dopamine
Which causes issues with behavior
U don’t have to have extensive medical knowledge to figure this out
It’s just common sense
I am not taking any dopamine agonist.
It is very interesting your that "observations" turn to be just "common sense". Uh-huh.
Its interesting that your responding immediately instead of tomorrow or the next day
Wouldn’t you say?
That’s just a tad bit on the compulsive side maybe?
And I don’t base what I believe primarily on observation
At least I hope I don’t
That would leave a huge gap in the self awareness department lol
I've been buying shoes that I mostly don't need and havnt even worn. I've never been a shoe person - never get the jokes about women and shoes - but now have 5 boxes sitting in my bedroom! It's odd as I know I'm acting out of character but don't really care. I don't understand myself really.
Could be worse I suppose!
This is an example of what I’m talking about but most don’t even have behavior changes to this extent
Why even bring it up if it’s not an issue with most pwp?
Because it IS an issue and it hasn’t even been acknowledged by the medical powers that be
It’s a very real and serious issue that will get worse as medications get more potent in the future
Xadago is a medication I started taking 6 months ago and it is helping tremendously but it’s increasing behavior issues just as much
opposite sides of the spectrum
I have caused some troubles on this site seeking answers. I come by it naturally.

Dont try to argue with Serenity, he will always have an answer, and probably one you will not understand, its a brain thing. Happy New Year.
It is my research that the endocannabinoid ( how ever you spell it ) is the neurotransmitter that regulates the other neurotransmitters.
WORKS FOR ME
WE have so much in common with PTSD patients. Some event or condition threw our brain out of wack.
