I have had the good fortune of being the recipient of the full anesthesia technique 3 years ago today. It was performed by Dr Kim Burchiel who is the first surgeon in the US to perform DBS and a pioneer in the full anesthesia technique. This was performed at Oregon Health Science University in Portland.... a world class facility.
My results were phenomenal in that prior to the procedure I was crawling to the bathroom 4-5 x a night due to “uringency/retention “ and extreme foot dystonia. This was somewhat better during day but always very limiting. I have the PIGD version and don’t suffer from tremors.
The day after the surgery I immediately had a 80+% improvement in both the bladder issues and the dystonia.... this was due to the correct placement of the electrodes only since they were not even turned on yet. My recovery was really a breeze. I took only 3- 1/2 doses of the prescribed pain meds over a 2 day period.
I know that the FDA doesn’t allow the bladder issues to be included in the indicators for this technique. It’s for motor symptoms not autonomic dysfunction.... however it is my experience and opinion that Dr Burchiel knew how to effectively treat it with the exact electrode placement site. My target area was the globes pallidus internus, not the subthalamic nucleus which is the most common site. Do you know where your electrodes where placed, Ian?
Magnificently informative yet concise!
Big thumbs up.
