Sudden sleep

Has anybody taking Xadago had to put up with side effects from day one and been able to overcome them. I have started Xadago today with a 50 mg tablet and about 3 hours later found myself falling to sleep without realising it until awakening some time later only to drop off again. This sleepiness went on for about 7 hours. It is recommended to start Xadago on 50 mg for 2 weeks before taking 100 mg a day. Could side effects lessen over that time.

Hubby has PD...gets to sleep ok but wakes up several times. I'm opposite so take Ambien which Ins only lets me have 1/2 of which doesn't work as well. He asked Dr. for sleep help but didn't get Ambien...something else like Gabapentine (for seizures)which seems to continue on to next day and that's no good as Sinemet causes afternoon sleepiness. I was given Gabapentine too years ago by Nueroligist and I didn't like it. M.A.

Hi ecurb,

I don't take Zadago (Safinamide) but I Googled it & this is what I found.

Dopaminergic side effects

Safinamide used as an adjunct to levodopa may potentiate the side effects of levodopa, and pre-existing dyskinesia may be exacerbated, requiring a decrease of levodopa. This effect was not seen when safinamide was used as an adjunct to dopamine agonists in early stage PD patients.

Without a little more information about you (age, gender, location, meds etc) & your condition (stage of PD, how long you have had PD, do you have any other health issues) it is almost impossible to provide any useful input.

Hi Honeycombe3, thank you for your reply. I am a male and will be 76 tomorrow 22nd September. My PD diagnosis goes back to March 2001, and is my only problem health wise. Present medication is Madopar 125 6 per day, 125 SL at 10 pm and 1 125 dissolving tablet at 5 am, and finally an 8 mg Neupro patch daily. My condition is late PD with ON/OFF at 2 and 1/2 hour intervals of dizziness and/or stiffness of trunk and legs. Of the OFF/ON intervals ON represents about 30 minutes if I'm lucky and during that time I can move around almost normally. The rest of the time walking is not possible more often than not, and I can only find some relief upon lying down. As for Xadago I intend to try it again in about a week over several days on half a tablet and even longer if I can bear side effects which are excessive sleepiness and poor balance which could cause falls.

I currently take Rasagiline, and was shocked to find out that my copay was $131 because I was in the donut hole. Fortunately I have a card from a nonprofit that covers what insurance does not up to $1500 per year. My MDS gave me a prescription for Xadago to try if it came out cheaper but if sudden sleepiness is a problem I will stick with the Rasagiline since he thinks that the two drugs are equivalent. The doc did say that all PD meds of all types can have sudden sleepiness as a side effect, but so far taking the Rasagiline and Sinemet I've been fine. Anyone else having somnolence with Xadago?

I don't take that one but i do take ropinerole and after being on ropinerole for over a yr i began suddenly falling asleep and actually fell asleep while going up some stairs and fell down a flight and had a head injury, 8 broken ribs, & a broken femur. Be careful to continue to talk to your dr about side effects you are experiencing

That is really terrible Christy. So sorry. Hope you are recovering well.

OMG! You may have fainted rather than fell asleep. Have you been checked for low blood pressure upon standing? (Orthostatic hypotension). Ropinerole can cause that.

My doctor has prescribed Xadago but I'm still waiting for approval from the insurance, It will replace Azilelct which I now take daily to extend my 'On" periods . My doctor said I should stop the Azilect for two weeks before I start the Xadago because it takes that long for the Azilect to wear off completely. (I also take Sinamet and Mirapex 4X day). Maybe you need to stop or reduce one of your meds. Have you told your doctor about this?
