Namenda + Exelon

My Mother started Namenda a month ago, then added an Exelon patch one week ago with the hope that these would help her gait freezing. The problem is actually getting much worse! Has anyone experienced such a paradoxical effect? I'm not sure what else is causing such a precipitous downward spiral in her walking?! Thanks, everyone!

Try giving her Vitamin K for gait freezing, if she is able to take it.

I have never heard of either of these two medications, but I am under the impression that there is no known medication yet that has been proven to slow down the progression of Parkinson's disease or any of its symptoms.

However there is something your mother CAN do, if she is prepared to put in a little effort. She may of course have some other physical problems that may prevent her from doing this.

I am talking about WALKING. Not just ambling along but waling with intent. She may feel that it is too late to start doing walking, but IS IT? If she were to walk, as fast as SHE CAN for even one minute, and then do that again tomorrow and again the next day, it will not be long before she finds that she is able to walk for more than a minute. In fact, she will find that she can slowly increase it to several minutes.

When she is able to walk for ten minutes then she should do that every second day, not every day. That will give her muscles a chance to recover properly. Then every second week, she can add another five minutes onto her walking time, always walking as fast as she can. When she is walking for an hour, she should not increase it any further. She must stick to one hour, every second day and try to go faster every time.

Do you know how well she will feel, very quickly. It is like a miracle and it COSTS NOTHING!

I have been able to overcome my Pd in this way. It took me several years, but during all that time I was getting better, not worse. In 2002 I came off all my Pd medication and have been off it ever since. I am now 82 and live a normal life, even though I still have my Pd symptoms.

For more information, look at my website, reverseparkinsons.net and read over 400 articles that aim to help is overcome Pd symptoms. It costs nothing!

Has you mother had a firm diagnosis? The drugs you mention are not those commonly prescribed for Parkinsons.

My mother had Alzheimer's and I'm sure exelon was one of her meds

These are for Dementia, or Cognitive decline.

New research points to drugs typically used to treat cognitive symptoms as a way to treat gait issues.

As the experimental use of the new drug is making her worse, why not ask your mother's Neurologist to prescribe something tried and tested.

Is the Neuro a PD/movement disorder specialist?

Hi, I see that this is 8 months ago, but my mom's neurologist has suggested this drug for her, as well. Did you end up staying on it or no, may I ask?

Thanks, Sarah

My mother stayed on it, but I can't say with 100% certainty that it's helpful. We are staying on it in case... but it's hard to verify. It hasn't hurt to my knowledge, if that helps? Sorry I can't be more informative. She's also still using the Exelon patch 1/day. Thanks!
