What is an H. pylori infection?

H. pylori are spiral-shaped bacteria that grow in the digestive tract and have a tendency to attack the stomach lining. H. pylori infections are usually harmless, but they’re responsible for the majority of ulcers in the stomach and small intestine.

H. pylori is a common type of bacteria that usually infects the stomach. They may be present in more than half of all people in the world, according to the Mayo Clinic. The “H” in the name is short for Helicobacter. “Helico” means spiral. The bacteria are spiral shaped.

H. pylori normally infect your stomach during childhood. While infections with this strain of bacteria typically don’t cause symptoms, they can lead to diseases in some people, including peptic ulcers, and an inflammatory condition inside your stomach known as gastritis.

H. pylori are adapted to live in the harsh, acidic environment of the stomach. These bacteria can change the environment around them and reduce its acidity so they can survive. The shape of H. pylori allows them to penetrate your stomach lining, where they’re protected by mucus and your body’s immune cells are not able to reach them. The bacteria can interfere with your immune response and ensure that they’re not destroyed. This can lead to stomach problems.

Helicobacter is important because before its discovery stomach ulcers were considered due to stress etc etc and so treated with psychological therapy and antacids but once they found the H bacter they were able to treat by antibiotics and cure it.

It has been suggested that it may be a causal factor in Parkinsons and was talked about alot at the time i was diagnosed in 2008. The idea that Parkinsons might start in the gut is certainly not new dispite the recent hype.

Here is so more info to add to Bailey's.

Helicobacter pylori, previously called Campylobacter pylori, is a bacterium found usually in the stomach. It was identified in 1982 by AUSTRALIAN scientists Barry Marshall and Robin Warren, who found that it was present in a person with chronic gastritis and gastric ulcers, conditions not previously believed to have a microbial cause.

It is also linked to the development of duodenal ulcers and stomach cancer. However, over 80% of individuals infected with the bacterium are asymptomatic, and it may play an important role in the natural stomach ecology.

More than 50% of the world's population harbor H. pylori in their upper gastrointestinal tract. Infection is more prevalent in developing countries, and incidence is decreasing in Western countries. H. pylori's helical shape (from which the name is derived) is thought to have evolved to penetrate the mucoid lining of the stomach.
