This is is sad news but perhaps it helps get information out about Parkinsons. When I see these opportunities, I write in to CNN, or whatever the broadcast news vehicle is, and remind them that this is an important chance to get information out to the public about where money can be donated, such as Michael J Fox Foundation, to help fund research that can find a cure. If you are interested in sending requests or comments in, here is a link to CNN's website for doing that:

cnn.com/feedback/

Here is what I sent them (if you want to use this as a similar outline)

"The morning news about the death of Janet Reno is important and sad news but it also a great opportunity to shed light on Parkinsons Disease. A great vehicle to donate money for ongoing research into this disease is the Michael J Fox Foundation, at michaeljfox.org/. It would be great if you can share information on what is going on to help stop Parkinsons while covering the news of Janet Reno"

Thank you Eva, the more of us that state our interest the more likely we can make an actual impact. On a separate note it pains me to see all the spending on the election that could go for research for curing disease.

When I heard she died due to complications of pd I had anxiety attack.....is this pd going to kill me too? I was told you die with pd not because of it !

Leelee, based on what I've read it seems that dying from a complication of PD is not unusual. Earlier this year we lost Muhammad Ali to a complication of PD which happened to be pneumonia and also not uncommon, as I understand it. Perhaps we have the power to start changing the stats based on a clearer understanding of things we can do individually to improve our odds, such as exercise.

given the many deaths reported of celebrities with Parkinson's I don't believe the ,"you die with Parkinson's Not because of it. I think many Parkinson's patients DO die of Parkinson's complications.

You are right. If you look at the US census causes of death, PD is listed, and most recent number was 25k/year IIRC.

Good idea.

You lose about 10 years if diagnosed < 65 years old and about 5 if diagnosed > 65 years.

That's just physical death. I add at least 50% to that. But if anxiety like mine is the 1st symptom, I think a fair estimate is 2x that for "years lost".
