"Google co-founder Sergey Brin has given $126.6 million worth of Alphabet stock to the Sergey Brin Family Foundation and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Forbes reports."
"....both Brin’s mother and an aunt were diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and Brin himself carries the Parkinson’s-related mutation of the LRRK2 gene."
I believe Brin is "Leftist". People donate their money on things that are close to their heart. No need to bring politics into this. I guess I missed Fox news $127 million dollar donation.
"Democrats and Independents both had many zero-to-very-light givers (less than $100 for the year), and modest numbers of heavier givers. Republicans, in comparison, had comparatively few skinflints, and numerous serious donors—31 percent sharing at least $1,000 with charity, versus 17 percent among Democrats, and 20 percent among Independents."
I could go and pull quotes off the internet to say different, but I am stopping here. My point is why even bring politics into this? Let's talk about things that help people with PD. I am just thankful Brin, MJF and others are using their status and money to help us out.
So you never heard of the 'Zuck Bucks' scandal of the 2020 election? He personally donated 400 ... 400 ... 400... MILLION dollars of which 90% when to support democrat precincts
The truth may be that in this thread you have, at times, used the word truth synonymously with opinion - a bit like Amber Heard does with pledge and donate. (That's my opinion anyway.) Bear in mind when you read this that often times people don't want to hear the truth (or even an opinion).
It is also my opinion that the following will not generate one extra cent of donations to the PD cause. Imagine being stood on a street corner shaking a tin at passers by and:
* Being openly jealous and resentful of the focus given to other chronic conditions.
* Ranting about politics.
* Pigeon-holing people for not donating what you consider to be enough.
As I was driving to work in Manchester, England, not half an hour ago, I was thinking how it seems a significant minority of US citizens go out of their way to find reasons to hate instead of love, or at least live and let-be. Got into work and on checking the HU forum I found this nugget. HAPPY FRIDAY 🤪
It is really sad, and upsetting to me, personally, to see the political hatred spewing out, in the USA, today! Our country is sharply divided, and, it looks like, it is incurable, sorta like PD, in an odd way! Just my opinion, and my opinion means nothing, to most people!
We all know that the media has always preferred the ranting of some wound-up fruitcake over a nuanced opinion because the former generates soundbites and headlines, and that translates to cash. All we should expect is a never ending cycle of 'truths' voiced by the hard of thinking who are often stoked up by one or the other side of the political spectrum, who in turn stoke up fellow half-wits, and thus the $$$ cycle rolls on. I imagine you are not really a deeply divided nation if you scratch beneath the surface and that the vast majority of people (like everywhere) are quite happy to have their differences but muddle on together regardless - the media can never entertain that thought though, and I have as much idea about how to cure that as I have how to cure PD.
Looks like politics has permeated one of my daily routines. Let the haters hate. I'm too busy trying to heal. Anybody get all shaky after reading this? Or is my C/L kicking in?
HIV had a vocal ... but organized sliver of people in the USA -- but still got 3 BILLION dollars in funding for research which lead to treatment and a 'cure' of sorts...
I don't see the point of classifying peoples attitudes and beliefs, either political, religious or other, into left-wing or right-wing. Most people are somewhere in between. There are very few hard dividing lines in life. Autism is a spectrum for instance. PD is different for everyone and seems to be an umbrella term used to refer to a collection of many related groups of causes and symptoms. Viewing life through a binary lens isn't helpful to our goal of beating Parkinsons. There probably won't be one "cure for PD". There will be many, for all of the different PDs we are experiencing. I lean left, for lack of a better term, but I don't care much about who funds the eventual successful treatment for my PD, as long as it isn't at someone else's expense. Let's keep our eyes on the prizes.
