Acid Reflux and Parkinsons

I have been diagnosed with Acid Reflux and am just beginning to realise what a nightmare this is. Anything I eat or drink affects me. I have meds from my GP, which do not really help. I take meds for Parkinsons and am beginning to wonder if these are interacting in any way with my meds for Reflux. Is there anyone else who has a problem of a similar nature? My Parkinsons, which I have had for a number of years, is not as well controlled as it was and my off times are getting longer.

Here is an article I posted for another person with acid reflux:

Regression of gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms using dietary supplementation with melatonin, vitamins and aminoacids: comparison with omeprazole.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/169...

I think the study will help to answer your question and point the way to a solution.

No red wine or heavy meet in the late evening. Lose weight. Elevate head of bed. Sleep on left side.

Here a link with the important details missing from the article I posted:

"In the study, 176 patients took a combination supplement containing melatonin (6 mg), tryptophan (200 mg), vitamin B12 (50 micrograms), methionine (100 mg), vitamin B6 (25 mg), betaine (100 mg) and folic acid (10 mg), while 175 patients were given 20 mg of omeprazole, a common prescription medication for GERD. They took one capsule of their designated supplement for 40 days after dinner."

The good news is every one of the listed supplements listed are good for PD and actually may improve you body's use of sinemet. Recently, it was discovered why sinemet stops working and the answer is it causes DNA methylation. In a prior HealthUnlocked thread I posted information about methionine and betaine hydrochloride, both methyl donors, and how they have been used to improve the condition the condition of PD patients (1985 methionine) or tested in PD animal models (Iran various years). It is a fair amount of reading but the information is laid out in the thread.

This combination of supplements will most likely make you drowsy. Melatonin is used as a sleep aid as is tryptophan.....

I have been on Omeprazole for years for my acid reflex but recently it has gotten much worse. For the past month I have been dealing with severe reflex, nausea, stomach pain and throwing up 1 to 3 times per day. I have been scheduled for a hydro scan in a couple of weeks to see if they can pin point the problem. My Dr.s believe it may be Gastroparesis. When you Have Gastroparesis, your stomach takes a lot longer to empty. This delay can cause belly pain, bloating, and belching. It can also cause hiccups, heartburn, nausea or vomiting. You may not feel like eating. These symptoms may come and go. The most often occur during and after meals. You may be full after only after a few bites of food.

This condition occurs when the nerves in your stomach don't work properly. Diabetes, Parkinson's stroke and some medications can also cause this condition.

Previously I found these products for gastroparesis and both have been tested with PD patients.

My husband and I are both on Proton pump inhibitors for acid reflux. Have been on them for over 5 years . They work fine with my husband's parkinson meds. But we both have been found to be vitamin b12 deficient. I google that and found long term use of these acid pills is often the cause and that one should take b12 with them. Our doctor has us on b12 shots for 10 weeks and than we will go on a prescription not over the counter kind they do not help. We eat very well but one can not eat enough due go lack of intrinsic factor. Be sure to have your b12 checked.

Thank you for your reply. I also have had a course of B12 injections and have them topped up regularly. I have not felt any benefit from them and had them before my reflux started. I did wonder if they had been the cause of my reflux, but it appears not.

Yes it is a problem with every meal. My stomach expands like a giant puffball and I have something similar to heart burn. One squeezed lemon in warm water with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a dollop of honey helps within a half hour.
