I always had problems with knowing how much to take and I think I tended to be cautious with the dosage

I we diagnosed with PD in 2002 and advanced PD this year, I was taking 250 MG of Carbidopa-levodopa 6 times a day and also deal with Generalized Dystonia at the carbidoa levodopa wear off. I have replaced my carbidopa/levodopa with mucuna and it has resolved my constipation and dry mouth and greatly reduced my halucinations. It gas greatly Increased my quality of life. I am getting DBS surgery in October, and this will hopefully reduce the amount of l-dopa I need to function. I got a small gram scale that measures to 3 decimal places at a head shop for $10. I used it to weigh out level measuring spoons of 15% l-dopa mucuna powder - I calculate how much l-dopa is in each measure to get an equivalent dose of mucuna. But I found that I need a little more than the equivalent dose for it to be fully effective. I have found that many of my bad medication side effects have either gone away of are greatly reduced. Mucuna has a lot of stuff in it that is very good for PD and you don't need to take Carbidopa or Entacapone with it. I mix it in milk or Lactate - I tend to be lactose intolerant and I find that the milk acts like Entacapone as it slightly reduces the rate of absorption and so reduces peak dose agitation. Mucuna starts working in 5 to 30 minutes depending on what is in your stomach, so I avoid eating for an hour before taking it. This is true of Carbidopa-levodopa as well. I found that if mucuna powder dissolves better if you let it sit in the milk for a few hours before taking, then just give another stir and drink all at once. If the milk is room temperature it absorbs quicker. The mucuna has a tendency to turn purple when it sits in liquids for a while, this i s fine.

I also found some spoons that measure a dash, pinch and smidgen, very helpful. I found that different spoons that are made by different companies are not uniform in their measurements so you have to weigh them. The stainless steel ones with fully round bowls are best. Avoid aluminum and plastic and use glass containers.

mplsmaxx, I am grateful for your sharing. It came at just the right time. I am the caretaker for a 54 year old son DX with Datscan, Aug, 2015. First symptoms appeared March of 2014 and many follow-up tests to get to DX. My son takes ONLY C/L-dopa, plus lots of supplements (with great help from Silvestrov). My son takes the 25/100, 2.5 tablets 3X daily. At 6Am, 10:30AM, 3pm. Yesterday he received his first Botox Shots for his cervical dystonia. While there he told his Neuro that he wanted to supplement his C/L-dopa with Mucuna pruriens. His neuro told him he had no problem with that and if it didn't work when he returned in October they would tweak his meds. The Neuro did not offer to help him and we did not ask. After all I have read on this post, I was relieved that we could inform and not get negative comments. The conversation started because the Neuro mentioned that he thought my son needed to have his meds increased/tweaked. I have followed closely the postings on Mucuna and read the book MUCUNA VERSUS PARKINSON by Dr. Rafael Gonzalez Maldonado. The book is very helpful, but not specific. Different parts of the book offers different information, and some can be interpreted as contradictory. I DO NOT WANT TO BUY THE POWDER AND MIX IT. I want to start VERY slow with capsules (already pre-measured). I realize the capsules could still be subtly different from each other even though the same brand. Maldonado recommends (pg 99) starting slow with SOLARAY DOPA-BEAN, 15%, because it has 333mg of extract of MP which is equal to 50mg of natural levodopa in "half a tablet of Sinemet Plus". HERE IS MY QUESTION: When you say replaced your C/L with the MP. Do you mean, as best as possible, you strived to get the EQUIVALENT MEASURE OF MP to your intake of 250 MG of C/L-dopa 6 times a day? Maldonado states that MP can be 2 to 3 times more potent than Sinemet (not in the same passage of his recommendation). Right now, we have lowered the C/L-dopa to 2 tablets 3X daily and added ONE SOLARAY DOPA-BEAN equal to 50mg of Sinemet. I figured we would see how it goes and than go from there. I'd appreciate your comments, and anyone else who care to share their experience. Thanks

I have read/studied the book by Dr. Maldonado on Mucuna. I have not, as of today, started taking Mucuna. My plan is to take the Mucuna with the supplements suggested by our forum member, Rich. However, the info in Dr. M's book regarding dosages needs clarification. I have the Solaray Dopa-Bean (15%, 333 mg extract). This is suggested as a low dose with which to start. However, I purchased the Now Dopa Mucuna also (120 mg Leva Dopa, 15% concentration, 800 mg. powdered seeds). Those computations are predicated on a dose of 2 capsules, the suggested dosage on the label. Dr. M considers the Now Mucuna "high dose". Furthermore, to add to the confusion, I purchased the Health Solutions L-Dopa that was sold on Rich's link posted on this forum. I purchased it through Amazon, not Ebay.

This product has 350 mg Mucuna (L-dopa 99% extract). I called Health Solutions and inquired how much L-dopa is in each capsule. The customer rep merely read the label and provided no knowledge of how much L-dopa was in each capsule.

Basically, before I start Mucuna, I am scrutinizing the three options I purchased as noted above. Solaray is low dose. Now Dopa Mucuna is classified as high dose.

Questions: How much L-dopa is in the Solaray dopa? How much -dopa is in the Health Solutions brand? How is the computation made on the basis of mucuna mg and percentages noted on the label.

I did purchase the Health Solutions brand (six bottles!!!) and presently consider it "high dose" and unsuitable--at least to initiate therapy.

I am on no PD medications.

Any thoughts or insights germane to the above would be gratefully appreciated.

IF YOU'RE NOT ON ANY PD MEDICATIONS, (neither am I) I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHAT YOUR SYMPTOMS ARE. if you don't mind. WHAT PROMPTS YOU.?

Syncletica in reply to999---666

The impetus to initiate Mucuna L-Dopa therapy rather than synthetic (Sinemet) is prompted by the attention that Mucuna has received from impeccably credentialed top neurologists, i.e. Dr. Warren Olanow and Dr. Andrew Lees. I encourage anyone interested in a viable alternative to read/study Dr. Maldonado's book entitled "Mucuna versus Parkinson".

Hi

My symptoms are left leg and arm tremor, some left foot toe dystonia and some slowness of movement in left hand and arm. None of which gets me down too much though sitting relaxing takes on a new look with a resting tremor :) John Pepper is my inspiration I took on making my arm swing early on even before I had my diagnosis or new about John. I am fit healthy and feel very blessed apart from getting embarrassed about the tremor not much else impacts as I am right handed. I am 61 and clean for a living gave up my administration job because of the tremor. I had a bit of farming experience and handling chemicals maybe impacted? I have been on Chinese herbs and feel I'm not getting any worse I like the idea of natural healing where possible so thought I'd try maxima for myself. All in all when I see little children suffering with cancer etc I don't feel like I'm doing too badly at present thank you for your interest it's nice to have a fellowship of friends

your tremor is proof positive you've got PD.....I don't have any, and my symptoms are on the wane....so i'm afraid to take anything that might check this progress.

are you aware of leaky gut and leaky blood brain barrier? check out mercola.com, he sells supplements but don't let that dissuade you......he communicates like MD's don't have time to do anymore. he emails his articles on pertinent stuff these days. (I will try pasting one, if I can....not very computer savy,)

If I understand correctly (if not please correct) Rich (Silvestrov) posted info which included a HEALTH SOLUTIONS L-Dopa (Mucuna) in capsules. You purchased it thro Amazon.com not E-Bay. I'd appreciate the posting date of the original discussion so that I may read thro it. I only remember Rich posting Mucuna info that requires one to mix. Please do send me the posting of that original discussion. I am interested in buying capsules and not mixing the Mucuna. Thanks

Was diagnosed with Parkinson's 5 years ago and can not speak walk hand

YAH, I READ SOMETHING TO EFFECT THAT THIS OIL IS BENEFICIAL BECAUSE OF SHORT-CHAINS OF MOLECULAR STRUCTURE AND THAT IT HAS 6-8 OF THEM. TWO ARE THE MOST BENEFICIAL, BUT YOU CAN GET SOMETHING MORE ACTIVE. IT'S AN OIL...CAN'T REMEMBER THE THREE LETTER NAME OF IT. YOU CAN PROBABLY FIND IT ON GOOGLE.

I THINK YOU'RE IN BAD SHAPE, YOU SHOULD EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT NUTRITION. I FIND MERCOLA.COM A REALLY GOOD SOURCE. COMPREHENSIVE....MAYBE THAT'S WHERE I READ ABOUT ??? OIL

Hi ryanjames

I'm finding it difficult to buy an organic mucuna pruriens here in Australia. Can't seem to get it from the Honest to Goodness site. I'd really appreciate it if you could please tell me where you get yours from now, and also what strength of l-dopa it has.

Thank you so much! We have some mannitol here but haven't been game to start it. A friend's son is a doctor and works in the Emergency department and said they use it sometimes to draw fluid/blood from trauma areas, but it's monitored very closely, so it got the wind up me...he said to be very careful. The mannitol we have here is from the Melbourne Food Ingredient Depot, manufactured in Germany, but not organic :(. How much do you take?
