Ok here's the next brain teaser. Anyone do thinking about doing or have done stem cell treatment? I was told yesterday by a dr at one of the locations here we are decades behind international Medicine. They are just beginning research and it is patient funded. I've had prices from $8900 to $14700. She couldn't give me any stats as the few people who tried it were in their 80's. I get the feeling adult are not as effective or even work like the politically incorrect embryonic.

LEGITIMATE stem cell procedures are internationally in sync. Whether at home or abroad, stem cells derived from your own (autologous) adipose tissue (fat cells) are adult stem cells and, as such, will NOT differentiate into the dopamine producing neurons needed to resolve Parkinson's and it's symptoms (anyone who implies otherwise is simply after your money).

Unless/until you're offered a procedure that involves using your own cells (typically skin or blood) to create IPSCs 'induced pluripotent stem cells' (essentially converting them into an ethical, pluripotent, AND autologous 'embryonic' state) - which are then cultured or 'differentiated' into actual dopamine producing neurons (DA neurons) - you'd only be wasting your time, money, and possibly your health.

Phase I/IIa trials of a stem cell therapy for PD are being conducted in Melbourne, Australia through the Florey Institute of Neuroscience & Mental Health by Cyto Therapeutics, a wholly owned subsidary of the International Stem Cell Corporation, a listed US biotech (OTCQB.ISCO). The trial will evaluate the safety and efficacy of implanting human neural stem cell grafts (ISC-hpNSC®) intracranially. The company claims that "human stem cells have been shown to be as pluripotent as embryonic stem cells; however, their creation does not involve the destruction of a viable human embryo, which effectively sidesteps the controversy and ethical dilemmas associated with the use of human embryonic stem cells." The trial involves 12 people with moderate to severe Parkinson's and interim results are expected by October 2016.

I researched stem cell treatments as thoroughly as I could and discovered many things about them I had not known before.. I am scheduled for stem cell implant therapy on 6/8 in N C. My neuro at U VA is skeptical of anything that is not subjected to a double blind peer review and clinical testing for several years. I was diagnosed in 2003 and cannot wait for the FDA to review or change its policy re stem cells. My Dr.s who will carry out the implant have been very informative and upfront with me about the process, what they know , possibilities for some success, hopes,etc.

I am eager for the therapy and will share all info I have or will glean.

It appears that ones own stem cells (adipose or bone marrow---esp. the adipose) have the best chance of effectiveness in comparison with all other stem cells. There is no assurance that there will be any improvement but there have been dramatic results in some cases. The stats are sketchy at this point partly due to FDA intransigence and neanderthal attitude re some of these new products.
