Hi. I'm newly diagnosed with instability being my main complaint. I'm currently investigating the best exercise regimen for me.
Hello: Hi. I'm newly diagnosed with... - Cure Parkinson's
Hello
Good morning Ammiem
A good way to help correct your instability is by strengthening your core. I have been doing Crossfit for 15 months and i have improved 200%. Crossfit is a 1 hour long program that includes weight training, aerobic, and stretching.
Your age and condition would help to advise you and where you live not exact just a nearby large city.
I am 62 10 years dx and live a normal and full life using exercise and Rx meds
Bailey
Thank you. I do have a Pilates machine and tai chi DVDs. I'm also going to buy a stationary bike. I am 66 and am in otherwise great health.
It looks like you are on the right path. I strongly suggest that you include weight training it is what helps me the most. I now can dead lift 395 lbs and back squat 285 lbs. The dead lift when done correctly and it must be to avoid hurting your self is the most efficient exercise one can do. It will help your core. I do it only under the supervision of my trainer. It works a large percentage of your muscles.
That being said exercise, exercise,exercise,exercise,!!!
It does work.
Bailey
Gosh, I've just translated what all those lbs are. I can tell you I've probably never been able to lift that much, even when I was young and fit!
I only started lifting about a year ago. Never have tried to go for my best just did what i could. i an out dead lift 75% of the men at my gym no matter what age. The two days a go i dead lifted 225 lbs 91 times. in ten minutes.
My family calls me the beast.
I am old and fit.
If you had it once you can get back.
Dead lifting helps my arms flex better by stretching the muscles and joints. I do not get sore when i dead lift.
Set a goal you may surprise your self.
Good morning Bailey !
Blessings to you on this good morning 👍
I found a CrossFit training center 10 minutes bike ride from my house .
I am so excited !
I just got myself a tricycle. I can ride it there.
Soon I will be doing CrossFit training.
Thanks to you !👍👍👍🌺
Thank you!
Hi AmmieM. I have had Pd symptoms since 1963 and was only diagnosed in 1992, because I had been doing lots of exercise since 1970.
At the 1st World Parkinson's Congress held in Washington DC the results of a study, into the effects of exercise on the progression of Pd, were announced by Dr Beth Fisher. She said the the best exercise was High intensity walking over uneven surfaces.
I have been doing fast walking since 1994 and in 2002, only 8 years later, I was able to stop taking my Pd medication and have lived a normal life evere since. I still do my fast walking 3 times a week and I am now 81 years of age.
Go to my website - reverseparkinsons.net and read all about fast walking and many other interesting articles on the management of your Pd.
Good luck
John Pepper
Thank you
AmmieM. The best way to get the best way to keep going is to develop a program that you enjoy. If its fun you will succeed and if it isn't you won't. Basics should include stretching, aerobics, balance and strengthening. If you're looking for a PD specific program go to the BIG website at PWR! gym.
All and any excercise will help-the more the better and if anyone gets pneumonia-if there is no muscle strength there is very little hope of recovery. Have to keep up oxygen saturation or else.
Annie, pick something you truly enjoy. If it's a bore, you won't do it, no matter how duty-bound you feel. Dancing? Western swing, salsa, flamenco, ballroom ... ? A lot of my PD friends like hiking. Running, tennis, biking -- it doesn't matter, so long as you get your heart pumping. I do yoga and tai chi (DVDs or Youtube), work out with hand weights and do aerobics, although my knees are about shot. A "parky" on this site shared a terrific resource the other day with great info on exercising and more. Check it out: davisphinneyfoundation.org/... Good luck to you!
I do enjoy tai chi and will continue with it plus add in riding a stationary bike. I'm also trying David Zid's exercise DVDs
Thanks for that website
