HAS ANYONE HAD CATERACT SURGERY WITH HAVING A CHALIZIAN ON THEIR EYELID. MY EYE DOCTOR SAID IT IS AN INFLAMMATION AND NOT AN INFECTION AND WOULD PROCEED WITH THE SURGERY. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION? I AM ALSO CONCERNED BECAUSE I TAKE AZILECT AND DON'T KNOW WHAT PROBLEMS I WOULD HAVE WITH THAT. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INPUT I CAN GET. THANK YOU.

Hi, he's right, a chalazian cyst is not an infection. My daughter used to get them all the time. The best thing to do for them is to put a warm cloth or teabag on them. We used a teabag. I would make a cup of tea, remove the teabag and wait until it was cool enough to put on my daughter's eye. Then wrap it in a layer of kitchen roll (to reduce dripping), and she would hold it against her eye until it was cold. It used to make them heal a lot faster. Maybe you could try this every day before your surgery, and see if you can get rid of it by then?

I am not taking Azilect, I take Ropinirole and Stalevo. I have had both eyes done for cataracts with no problems. Since it is a surgical procedure and not medicinal, i don't see why there should be any problem.

The improvement is so good I wish I had taken the treatment years ago!! My eyesight is better than it has ever been!

I am on Azilect as well and have done quite a bit of research on it. I have read many articles that say you should not be taking the med for days before the surgery because of drug interactions with local and general anesthesia. I found only one article that said those restrictions were lifted. I would suggest talking to your neurologist and eye surgeon, have them talk to each other, and if necessary, consult with an anesthesiologist.

The following from Teva Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Azilect/Rasagiline, confirms Diane's advice on its interactions with anesthetics:

"Surgery

As with other MAOIs, patients taking AZILECT should not undergo elective surgery requiring general anesthesia. Also, they should not be given cocaine or local anesthesia containing sympathomimetic vasoconstrictors. AZILECT should be discontinued at least 14 days prior to elective surgery. If surgery is necessary sooner, benzodiazepines, mivacurium, rapacuronium, fentanyl, morphine, and codeine may be used cautiously."

I had both eyes done about 2 years ago, the difference is amazing and instant, I think that they only use local anesthetics I have been on Azilect but not at times of the surgery. Anyway it didn't work so I stopped it.
