Odd symptom

I have developed many symptoms over the past five years since I was diagnosed from loss of dexterity to very poor balance and occasional falls but the oddest is leaning to the left when I sit down (and sometimes when standing or walking slowly). Does anyone else have a lean?

yes. My left side is my affected side. When I started a walking program almost a year ago, I would have a definite lean to the left toward the end of my 3 mile walk. It was difficult to straighten up. I no longer experience that problem. I imagine this isn't an unusual thing.

yes john one of my first symptoms was leaning to the left especially when sitting behind the wheel although i didnt identify it with pd at the time and my right arm was the one affected initially with pd. now as the disease progresses my left arm has become the most troublesome......call me a medical mystery ha!

Yes, now that it it's mentioned, I did do that also and to the left. I'll have to notice if I still do.

Hi John. Yes! When I was diagnosed in 1992 I was walking while leaning forwards and to my left. I was able to consciously correct this problem but the moment I ceased to concentrate on it my body reverted to that position. This meant that I had to consciously stand up straight.

Are you able to consciously correct this posture problem?

Yes, but I revert as soon as I stop thinking about it. I'm doing it now as I sit in front of my computer. I consciously pull myself upright but when I concentrate on what I’m writing I start leaning again.

Hi John. Yes! You are correct! To begin with, your level of consciousness has to be very high, with no chance of thinking about other things, but as you progress you will find that that consciousness can become less 'full-time' and more in the background. It has taken me years to walk consciously, both on my fast walking forays and when I walk around the house or garden. Don't despair, it will happen!

My husband with CBD leans to the left sitting, walking, or standing. The lean goes away sometimes but it seems to show up and then a new symptom shows itself.

My PD began on the right side and I have a noticable right tilt when I am tired.Ive had this for many years. But my dexterity and balance are better than they were at onset prior to medication, and I havn't had any falls.

I have a bit of a PD stoop which the subconscious mind controls for me. I suppose it is a reaction against feeling like I could lose balance and fall. Perhaps your subconscious perceives a risk of balance loss to your right and overcompensates by leaning left.

we have Been married for 57 yrs . john diagnosed (officially for eight years . as I type this he is still sat in his wheelchair after me giving him his breakfast and gradually falling to on side . (Right in his case today that is lol )

We met when he was Twenty and I can remember even then when he sat beside me would feel his heavy weight leaning towards me . I ouod move to give him more room push him off .

Ahe was like it all his life . of course all those we had no idea there was a reason .

I am not saying if we had known he had Parkinsons even then it would have made a great deal of difference , after all of you don't know there I s anything wrong you are not going to worry about it . but , I might have reacted differently towards him if I had known ther was a reason for what I now know was SYMPTONS OF parkinsons . impatience in queues, while in conversation would suddenly change the subject which at the time was rude . this was his way of coping of not being able to keep a conversation going .

he didn't do t deliberately it was something he had learned to cope ,

My left side is the affected side--but I tend to lean to the right. I've read that leaning is very common with PD. I just never realized that I seem to be a little different. I too try to sit and stand up straight. Mountain pose in yoga is a good exercise to do periodically throughout the day. I've had PD for about 12 years.

i'm about the same way, except that i lean to the right. don't really know why, other then the fact that hy husband is hard of hearing and he doesn't like to wear his hearing aides. my chair is about two feet away from the TV, and he always turns the volume way up, so i lean way to the right to make it sound a little less loud. if there was someplace to move my chair to, i would. but there isn't any where else. i now do turn the volume down to where it's bearable. but not by much. a little compromise. even if i moved my chair to the dining room, he would jack it up to 79. that would still be to loud. i don't know if this could be the reason that i lean to the right always. i go on the computer so i don't have to hear it so loud. or it could be parkinsons.

I have a left lean.

To measure it, I stand with one foot on a bathroom scale and the other on a book of the same height. I repeat with the feet the other way around.

Weight total=83 kg; weight left=50kg; weight right=38kg; error=5kg; ratio=57:43

I think lean is well worth studying as a possible PD biomarker.

I have had a tendency to lean to the left for 15 yrs. Also my head has a tendency to take up a left posture when i am sitting down.Another one which is quite common is leaning forward when standing up and walking.

Just add it to the other Symptoms of PD.

Yes, I lean to the right when sitting. I notice when family/friends push me upright again. Not sure if I lean when I walk -will ask.

I do when my meds start wearing off.

It's the opposite with me, it's more obvious when the meds are working and my body is less stiff. If I'm sitting in a chair without arms like my computer chair I can find myself leaning at 45 degrees before I realised I’m doing it and straighten up..

My husband was having terrible balance issues for years. I noticed his feet turning so that he walked on the outside of his foot. Mentioned this to his DBS doc and to please look at his feet, doctor never did. Finally, last fall I begged his Neurologist to look at his feet. She looked and said D had dystonia. He was put on medicine (Artaine) and he is rarely falling now! Still having issues with falling into chairs. His pt person told him to imagine picking up a box and this will help with getting in and out of chairs! Glad we have this site to share info! Best of luck to all!

I was initially diagnosed 10 years ago. Initial on set of symptoms was on my left non dominate side. Before PD my left side was stronger (could lift more with my left arm). Now my left arm is much weaker.

I attribute this to PD effecting my left side more or perhaps longer? Anycase, couple of years ago noticed that when seated in car , tended to lean left , lean to side only, not to side forward or back. My experience suggests that is matter of my left side being weaker than my right side. We know that there is a joint imbalance where as a symptom of PD, flexor muscles are stronger than extensor muscles resulting in posture flexing forward. To me seems that seating upright has a similar dynamic where lean away from stronger side. Have learned to adapt to prevent falling off to left in car seat.

Hi johnwt author of the thread entitled "odd symptom."

Shall we have a weird symptom competition. I'll start with my strangest symptom and that is Dandruff. This was getting quite bad until I started taking the Dopamine agonist, Prampexole. Hardly a dandruff flake to be found anywhere now. - beat that.
