I recently came across a video interview of Dr. Rudy Tanzi, who is regarded as one of the top neurologists and researchers on Alzheimer's The interviewer asked Dr. Tanzi what he does himself for his health and to forestall Alzheimer's. He said the only supplement he takes is ashwagandha but he advised against buying it online since many of the products aren't any good. He said the best version is sold by Douglas Labs but requires a doctor's prescription. I checked and Douglas Labs no longer requires this. I ordered some and I've been taking it for a month and I feel better than I have in a long. I've done more research on ashwagandha and Dr, Tanzi which I've detailed on my blog -- bit.ly/1qKQGPT

This site now seems to be full of regular purveyors of supposed cures and potions, it is getting like a medieval market place.
while I'm open to natural cure suggestions, I supposed snake oil purveyors are next.
I am open to anything which may help, unfortunately many of the products have not got any scientific background or research as to their efficacy.
Eventualy one can cling to straws in the hope of improvement, but find the only thing it does, is, lower one's bank balance and nothing to show for it!
The only thing I have found pretty good is one's own ability to try to do some sort of intense exercise. Afterwards you are like the proverbial ''Barney's Bull'' (Buggered) but it does create a feeling of achievment.
My neurologist agrees and has a lot of research to support your exercise program/ . He says tongue in cheek the only thing neuroprotective (slows progression) are: exercise, expresso (caffeine), dark chocolate and sex! I did see a suggestion to take sinimet with a Vitamin C solution and I'm trying that to reduce the water retention that builds up during the day==very painful. Let you know if it works
You livened my day and made me smile, Coffee definately. A good strong cup in the morning with my tablets gets me working. Occasionally, some Chocolate. (not too much, the weight problem you know) Sex! well so long ago I shall have to look that one up in the dictionary.

Thanks for this information. I will read your blog and also am pleased that it's led me to the Chopra Center website for more info. I am sorry you are met with cold shoulders from readers. Bear in mind, that most of the readers are still closed minded about other than Western dr.s, treatments, and pharmaceuticals. I firmly believe that in this day and aqge, we (including drs. in the West) will help patients so much more wholly, if they would incorporate the eASt and the WEst together. We need a good combination. I use both mucuna and a little bit of sinemet and am so much more eager to try something more natural than to experiment with a bunch of chemicals everytime the neurologist feels like experimenting on me. These chemicals have only been around a short time, and the tests are not conclusiive as to what happens when taken long term. The natural remedies are so much more gentle, agreeable to my body, and have been around for thousands of years.
I'm not at all troubled by the responses. My blog is full of my anti-supplement posts. I'm a strong believer in less is more when it comes to pills. I recently junked my blood pressure pills (with my doctor's approval). The only pills I take are a statin, my levodopa, vitamin D (at my doctor's urging), curcumin (the most studied of all supplements), and now ashwagandha. My research showed that ashwagandha is being studied at the labs at Massachusetts General Hospital, one of the leaders in Alzheimer's research, and Dr. Tanzi, it's director and one of the top neurologists in the country, says it's the only supplement he takes. Doesn't sound like snake oil to me. BTW, I recently did a couple of blog posts taking pleasure in the recent Senate committee's put down for Dr. Oz.

BTW, my research on ashwagandha showed it also has been touted as enhancing the libido. (I of course had to look up "libido" in the dictionary.

My opinion is that you are totally honest, also generous in that you are willing to experiment on yourself, then share your findings with all who care to follow you.
Although you are well into your eighties, have prostate cancer as well as Parkinson's, I look forward to your writings for many years to come.

My son, his s.o. other and I are midway through a two-week cruise of Norway's coast and fjords where I am impressed and inspired by seeing others much more handicapped than I am who are determined to keep on going.
