I am imagining that this Protein attached to the brain tissues is like plaque on the teeth which is removed by a dentist. But the question is, will that protein once blasted away by lasers return?

I think one reads of so many new theoretical treatments but I wonder when or ever they will develop into reality.

I Also thought that, it might 'fix' the problem with the proteins in the brain

but will it help reverse the attack on the nervous system?

I really hope that this new idea with lasers doesn't become the latest

Cure like DBS is which seems to be a hit and miss.

I am concerned that you refer to DBS as "hit and miss" considering that I just agreed to it. What do you mean?

Hi IamJoel56,

There are a lot of people who have said that ' it worked for them, others are trying to find the 'Sweet spot, others have stories where they've said 'it made them worse.

It is just my personal opinion on DBS but i do understand that for some there is no

other option in relation to their situation.

its the two quotes from medtronic's website that would worry me.

Quote (1) 'What benefits does DBS offer?

Although there is no cure for Parkinson's disease, DBS has been proven to reduce some of the symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease. My problem with that is it doesn't reduce symptoms with EVERYONE.

Quote (2) 'What are the potential risks of DBS?

Risks of DBS can include risks of surgery, side effects, or device complications.

I would not try to talk anyone out of doing this procedure.

Its just that with this invasive surgery there are no guarantees that it will benefit the patient

in the right way.

Any new progress has to be worth looking into. Very often these sorts of studies throw up a decent alternative whilst the original objective is proven to be a non-starter. And with advances in genetic engineering happening all the time we can live in hope that our current generations will be the last to suffer with Parkinson's.

IamJoe,

Good luck with your DBS treatment. No one can make the decision but you. Don't be deterred if that is what you decide to do. I've seen other postings here where several people had it done and recommended it. They said that it didn't work for everyone but they were glad they had it done.

Either way you go, please keep us informed. It takes courage to live. It takes courage to move forward. Nothing is certain.

I am not a doctor, but as a layman, I think that the removal of the Alpha-synuclein will not cure Pd, even if it is possible to remove it. What we are looking for is the cause of the clumping of the Alpha-cynuclein!

Found in the Daily Mail? Hmmm ... nuff said.

These clumps are not on the surface of the brain cells but within. Also they have been found in nerve cells in different parts of the body. The latest research indicates that the clumping is like a domino effect and can travel from affected cells to unaffected one. You'd have to do a heck of a lot of 'zapping' to eliminate the problem.

I agree with Moodyblue about the reliability of this source.

Not what you're looking for?
