DBS and freezing...does the surgery help control freezing episodes?.My MDS says no.just wondered if anyone had any success.
Freezing is quite easy to overcome! I am not a doctor, but I have knowingly had Pd for twenty years and have lived with Pd symptoms for fifty years. I overcame freezing by first of all, stopping trying to will my legs to move. Then I moved my weight onto one leg and then lifted the other leg in the air by bending the knee. I then started to walk. It is as simple as that. We Parkinson's patients have to consciously control our walking. Our subconscious mind is no longer able to control our walking properly.

There are two positions for DBS and one of them is better for freezing than the other. Electrodes in the Pedunculopontine Nucleus (PPN) might help with Freezing and falls.
Are you freezing when 'on' or 'off'? Have you tried Conductive Education for your freezing with cueing and strategies to move the thought processes to the conscious level rather than the sub conscious? Have a look at this document from Parkinson's UK. parkinsons.org.uk/sites/def...
Thanks to those who offered info on DBS and freezing.. soup..I mostly freeze when my meds are 'on'. I have tried many cues and am now using a U step. walker with a laser beam..it works as long as I concentrate on my feet and don't get distracted .......but doorways are still my. enemy
Even the Neuro's can't specifically tell you why DBS works....
I had it done 3 years ago and after a year of post surgical infections and reversals, re-implantings I can tell you I would do it again! It has taken some time to adjust and get the right settings, but I haven't "frozen" in many months. PD's symptoms change so easily, that is the major problem with the rigidity of the implant system.
It would be okay if I lived with a medtronics programmer!! (just sayin')
I know of a couple of people from the USA who have had DBS implants. Before which everything would freeze except their eyeballs.for several hours at a time several times per week. Freezing no longer happens to them.
I'm getting tired and annoyed with commercials in these postings.
