Anyone taking vitamin K2 for Parkinsons? The dosage is 180mcg-200 for gait problems..wondering how it works..thanks for any info..

K2 as menaquinone-4,( 1000mcg) and K2 as menaquirnone-7 (1000mcg) are in a supplement that we take. I think it helps a lot. It does act as a blood thinner, so if you are taking anti-coagulant or anti-platelet medications, or have a bleeding disorder you need to take that into consideration. We take several supplements and they have helped a lot, to keep the PD at a slow progression. It is less expensive to take carbadopa/levedopa, and easier, just pop a few pills several times a day, but the side effects were disruptive to our life.

Should I be taking D3 along with K2? You are right about the carbo/leva. side affects are very disruptive

This is an interesting post that stimulates more questions. Are you saying that you do not take any carbidopa/Levadopa or any other allopathic medications, only nutrient supplements for the Parkinson's? If so, will you tell us in what way is the carbidopa/Levadopa disruptive to your lives? Also,may I ask you to tell us what other nutrient supplements in addition to the K2 you are taking?

I'm trying to take B complex and D3 as directed but find I am not absorbing them. Constipation is my biggest problem, and I'm not absorbing these supplements so I don't take them. Constipation is becoming very terrifying.

D3 (And K2) are both Fat soluble nutrients, so you need to take them with some fat. You may want to consider taking them with Cod Liver Oil. Personally, I like Fermented Cod Liver Oil, because it naturally has K2 (as do most fermented foods) and D3 is MUCH more effective when taken in combination with K2.

I am a trifle bemused here. I have been taking K2 for years now - not anything to do with the PD but to help the uptake of vit D3. I asked my GPs advice on how to take the K2 but she pooh pooed it a a waste of time and money, I have just looked at the container and it says 200 ugs one a day. I buy this from Amazon and a container contains 1 year . I had not made the connection that I have no problem walking, my back is straighter - I had a noticeable start of a curvature (diagnosed as scoliosis_) and this has gone completely. I was putting all my faith in Dr. Costantini and B1 but I will now go back and revisit Robert Redfern the Serrapeptase guy who has a wonderful free to download ebook with indications on how to cope with various diseases. I downloaded the book to get the section on PD and he is my source for what supplements to take. I can heartily recommend Serrapeptase as an anti inflammatory and I take 2 2500 iu capsules per day and would not be without them. Much better for us oldies living with chronic pain (I damaged 2 vertebrae when I fell in the bath) and this removes the necessity for ibuprofen. By the way I no longer consult my GP regarding supplements as they really are not interested.

Google "Robert Redfern the Serrapeptase guy" Off the top of my head the book is called "Serrapeptase - the second gift from the silk worm. I will however get out of this and have a look at my desk top where I placed the book and get back. I cannot be too eulogistic about Serrapeptase as a pain killer and anti-inflammatory as I was really at the end of my tether with the chronic pain which was caused by a stupid careless fall in the bath. Every day the same grinding agony until I came home one day and sat down at the computer and tapped in "I have chronic back pain is there a supplement for this" and up popped Serrapeptase and from that I found RR and from that his e-book. Stupidly from the list of supplements he recommended for PD the one I opted not to take ( to save a few quid) was thiamine. Took me years to find Dr. Costantini (genufllect, cross myself and wish him all the best in heaven now he has been prematurely snatched away) So. don't do as I do do as I say and look up RR and go to Vitacure to buy it. I will get back to you - promise!!!!!!

As promised - go to RR's site and have a rake around until you find his free to download ebooks - he has several. I must have asked his team about what to take because thiamine is not mentioned or I had it from someone else. I digress - the book is called "The Miracle Enzyme is Serrapeptase the 2nd gift from silkworms.! Giving the answer to pain, chronic inflammation and clogged arteries" The section on PD is on page 66. Don't worry, they synthesise it now so no silk worms have to die! When it was discovered in Japan in the early 20th century they did not have this luxury and in the 30s a German Dr. called Nieper had great success with it and so it trickled down to me and now to you. Vitacure (tell Jim I sent you!)sell it on the internet and I take 2 2500 iu capsules one mid morning and one before bed. On an empty stomach. Wonderful!

Regarding Vitamin K2 I would recommend MK-7. It does have a much higher bioavailability and has a longer half time – this means that MK-4 “stops” in the liver, but MK-7 goes all the way to the brain. (In the brain, there is six times more K2 that K1). I would strongly recommend K2 (MK-7) if you want to prevent Alzheimer’s, and of course if you are unfortunate and has been diagnosed. But please remember, there are huge difference between K2 and K2 (quality). One should also remember that since most westerners are K2 – deficient, the first few weeks of supplementation – the body will use the K2 for proteins that are most needed (not Pink1 first). It will take a few weeks before K2 will reach the brain.

No problem Ivyanne! Some of the information I gave in previous post is from scientific articles and some are from my own experience. Please note that if you take Warfarin or similar medicines, talk to your doctor first. I take 360 micrograms of MK-7/Day. It is quite much and is not cheap. Please note that I am not diagnosed with Alzheimer’s but rather being K2 deficient (like 80-99% tested). For me it is worth it. It is hard to describe but my mind feels clearer and sharper. It took me six weeks before I noticed a change. But the most benefits from K2 should not be noticeable. There are a few “good” brands out there. I don’t know if I’m allowed to name brands on the forum, but try to find the ones that have done tests, then you know they work.

Yes! D3 is important for me (I don't get enough sun). But if you take D3, it's important to take K2 since they work together.

Hopefully they can test this on humans. But since K2 is a vitamin, it's no danger to try it.

Let me know if you notice any difference:) There is research indicating that K2 (natto) can prevent dementia or at least reduces the risk of becoming dements. Hopefully it can also help or slow down/stop the process.

Very interesting link. Especially having PD and my dad hAd Alzheimers...I have been taking 2000u of D3 but now need to add K2..but how much....thanks for much for your help

I think that prices will go down on K2 in the future- I read about some test that was on 360 micrograms, thats why I take it. Mabey you can try 360 for two months and see. Especially important if you take 2000u of D3!

K2 comes from natto, fermented soy beans. in the areas in Japan where thay eat it every day, they have 20 % of Osteoporosis, 25 % of CVD and aprox 33% of Dementia. Google Okinawa, very interesting!

Keep in mind that in Okinawa, they also intake an average of 13.5MG of Iodine a day (compared to 250 Mcg in the U.S. (YES, that's 1/4th of ONE MG), plus there's quite a few areas that get their water from Geothermal sources, which generally tend to have the highest amounts of Lithium Orotate (a natural form of Lithium that has been shown to be beneficial to those with Brain disorders). The world Health organization has indicated that low levels of Iodine in the food supply is the number one cause of childrend being born with Low IQ's in the world.

Great, did you find the Mk-7 kind? Well, K2 is not that well known yet. Many do not see the difference between K1 och K2, or MK-4 adn MK-7.

In a few years I think K2 will be as known as vitamin D.
