I would like to start a boxing or spinning program for PWP who want strenuous exercise. I'm on the board of the local chapter of the APDA.

Any advice? The YOPD community here is hidden. I want to draw them out of their homes and hiding places. Not just YOPD, but any age PWP who want challenging exercise.

I need advice, a jump start.

Use an Xbox connect. It is fun and instructive.

Contact Dr. Alessandro DiRocco NYU Hospital NYC. He has started an exercise program at the JCC in NYC. It includes support groups and seminars. A lifesaver.

Thank you, I will contact him. This is much appreciated.

In my humble opinion, being able to stay limber with stretching is more important then strenuous exercise. There are a lot of strenuous exercises for people without Parkinson's but, not many stretching classes geared to our needs

I agree. It is essential to say "fit" but hrs to find a class or group which suits us.

Lol Jill :-)

I need both stretching and aerobics. The stretching is obvious since being up tight (lol) is a major symptom. However, the aerobic side has also helped. I think what I do is similar to spinning. I use a stationary recumbent bike. I ride slowly to warm up, speed up for 20 seconds, slow down for 60 seconds and repeat the cycle. It was suggested to me by Dr. Chris Knight in the Kenesiology department at the University of Delaware.

Be sure to contact the PAN activist in your area. He/sure may have ideas on how to reach the YOPD and other PWP in the area. That person may have contact information for doctors and others in the area where you can also leave your information.

My sister owns a high intensity training facility where she has our dad, a PWP, workout. While he doesn't do the rigor of the machines she even had him working on a speed bag and walking on the "run side" of her gym.

Keep trying to reach out the the people in your community. You are to be commended!

I have had the privilege of training with Rock Steady Boxing, a non-contact boxing training program for people with Parkinson's, in Indianapolis for over five years. This program has changed my life from the many scenarios that I can imagine had I not had this opportunity. The program was unique when it was started, and now has the ability to share the benefits with other programs through the Rock Steady Training Camp. Please see rocksteadyboxing.org or visit us on Facebook.
