Hi there,

Requip is a dopamine agonist & along with the majority can cause unpleasant side-effects such as compulsive behaviours. My major unwanted behaviour was binge eating which caused rapid weight gain & fluid retention (oedema). I wonder what your Requip dosage is & why it was prescribed? I should add that I still take Requip (9yrs) but that I have slowly titrated down from 16mg p day to 8.

I gained 70 pounds on mirapex

I am a 140 pound tub! I am short and small boned, should be 125! I cut out ice cream, still need to lose the weight. This is a bummer. I am not on sinemet. I think it is because I used to jump around and do a million things, now I am slower, more sedentary.

I have been on requip

xl for 5 years 16mg i have put 2st on in weight I also retained fluid requip has now been reduced to 6mg but am now taking more sinemet. I am slowly losing weight now but also couldnt get enough to eat

I am on both carbid and requip about 6 times a day. my weight will go up and hen down. Depends on if I eat right or add a lot of sweets. Sometimes I get a big craving for sweets.

I started Sinemet Plus 25/100mg x 3 daily in January 2013. This was added to my Requip XL (slow release) 10mg daily. Prior to this (after 2 yrs on the agonist alone) my weight was fairly steady at 147 pounds which I felt comfortable with (given my height and age) . Since January, I have put on nearly a stone in weight and have swollen ankles and lower legs and find myself compulsively eating sweet things!!. My Gp is reluctant to do anything and suggests we just monitor the weight gain and that because I am aware of my need for chocolate and all things sweet, I should be able to manage it myself and cut back. In theory, I agree and I'm all for self management but after a recent injury to my knee and ankle doing yoga (of all things) it is leaving me feeling very miserable and in lots of pain, particularly at night. The physio assures me I have done nothing serious to my knee but swelling and pain caused by over stretching ligaments is adding to my existing woes. I used to walk 2/3 miles every day coupled with daily yoga, pilates and a weekly swim before I started Sinemet. Pain, swollen ankles, knees and weight gain have eaten deep into my motivation to exercise daily. Im not due to see my neuro until August and Ive more or less accepted I have to give this a go until then. Im just hoping things will settle down but like ftadh , I need reassurance . Sorry to have gone on about this but can so identify with ftdah's question.

I put on 25Kg with requip and it just fell off when I went onto Stalevo/Sinemet. You do the math!

I gained 30 lbs with requip and likewise lost it (along with a bunch of compulsive bad behaviors and nausea) when I got off it and put on sinemet. Did not love the ugly red marks around my ankles. Requip is the devil drug . . . for some of us.

hi i am also on sinemet dont know wat to do anymore so fed up of it all

PatV profile image
PatV in reply toftadh

sinemet is the only recourse. Eventually it has side effects. But I'd talk to neuro about titrating off the requip. Maybe azilect would work for you.

I hav e also gained ne arly two stone on 16 mg Requip XL , which I have now been

told to halve. This scares me and I wonder how others have been able to titrate

successfully - any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

PS. haven't yet spoken to GP or Parkinsons Nurse.

I titrated off. I felt so much better and have lost 30 lbs. Of course, eventually I know we develop dyskinesia but the alternative is painful dystonia. So I'd rather keeping MOVING.

rons profile image

I titrated down da's having tried most tablets and patches. And took an increasing amount of levdopa (stalevo). This has been much better with some drawbacks, levadopa does make you feel rubbish when it isn't making you feel better in two hour cycles. My consultant has suggested an apimorphine pump had anyone any experience of that. I don't l like the sound of that and it's da's again

PatV profile image
PatV in reply torons

I couldn't take Stalevo. Something in it keeps it from being absorbed in gut and I get visceral off. Wears off instantly, plus stains all bodily excretions and hence clothing. Yuk. Now I'm on 100/25 sinimet plus half a sinemet CR to moderate the wearing off. So far so good.

NOT SURE WHAT A STONE IS, <GRIN> BUT SOUNDS MUCH LESS TO SAY "STONE" THAN "POUNDS"

YUP, PUT ON LOTS OF POUNDS

I was diagnosed 5 years ago. I take Stalevo, 8mg Requip and Sinemet CR at night. I also have gained weight. At the moment I have sciatica and take Gaberpentin. It is extremely painful. However, I fight this and Parkinsons daily. I will not let it get the better of me. It is my body, well was, until Parkinsons arrived. I exercise daily and try to live as normal a life as I can. I also have gained weight and am thinking of joining Slimming World. It is worth a try.

I actually have days where I feel 'normal'. On these days I forget my med times as I do not need them. However, these days are followed by days when I cannot forget Parkinsons. These are the days when I need my strength to fight and I will continue to fight as long as I can. I exercise as much as I can and push myself as much as I can. I also get burning feet and find a cream called Balmosa works very well for me. You do not need a prescription. My weight gain is only a small part of the package.

Yes, I am sure you can. If not, ask the pharmacist, who may order it for you. It is not expensive to buy.
