I'm a relative newcomer to running. I've been finding it difficult getting out on a run the past few days due so icy pavements. My partner and I attempted a run a few days ago but turned back as I didn't fancy breaking anything.
The thing is though, I've seen a few brave folk still out there, running. My question is, what the heck? How in dog's name are they not falling and slipping about? Could they be wearing trail shoes or something? If so, are they worth investing in if they allow you to run without slipping on the icy surface?

Even trail shoes will slip on ice. They also vary hugely in their studding. I have a pair of Salomon trail shoes that have less pronounced grips than my Brooks road shoes, so there is no simple answer. The best surface to run on when it is icy is grass, in my opinion, as it provides a nice crunchy grip.
