What do you wear running?

Now it’s getting colder, I was wondering what people wear to run as I’m so cold during the warm up and cool down walk.

I wear a tee shirt long shorts and a light hoodie, the hoodie comes off after a couple of kilometres, very soon i will wear gloves and a scarf

Willow wears jogging bottoms tee shirt and hoodie, scarf and gloves for him soon too

when it gets a bit colder i will wear a long sleeved tee shirt

Very apt post 👍 definitely a buff or snood is a priceless item, that and the lightweight gloves

I wear leggings + a base layer shirt - long sleeve but breathable, which can also cover your hands. Also if its properly raining then a lightweight rain jacket!

Hat and running jacket.

T-shirt and shorts. When it gets really cold I'll wear a long sleeve top, another layer, shorts and maybe leggings. It all depends how you run. Slow and short runs mean that you won't really sweat it out (and get warm). Fast 5K or 10K will keep your cardio pumping and your body warm throughout.

I've written lots about it in the past couple of years here and recently on my blog. You can find out more about what to wear and when in my article about running gear, on runmrrun.com including other running related queries.

Whatever clothes you wear, comfort is the ultimate goal. You may be tempted to wear a snood only to have your neck sweating after 10mins of jogging. 😉

The usual advice is to dress for a temperature 5°C warmer than the thermometer shows. That doesn't help you with the initial chill before you're warmed up, so removable layers can help.

As I found yesterday, with layers of the right sort of fabric (not cotton) you might not notice the amount of dampness you generate, as it's been wicked away from your skin.

Also a long slow run will need more insulation than a short fast one.

Gloves are a must have. Frostbitten fingers, no!

Everything else is a personal preference arrived at by experimentation.

I wear a hoodie at the slightest bit of chill in the air. In winter, I’ll swap shorts for running tights. I may wear a beanie at the beginning of a very cold run.

That’s about it, really.

I am running in running tights, a vest top and a running zip front hoody with long arms and thumb holes. I find being able to zip up or down the hoodie dependent on my body temp is vital. The long arms with thumb holes really help, too, as when I get too warm I fold up the long sleeves so I can get air at my wrists. When it's really cold (I run first thing in the morning so it is often cold) I also have a head band thing that covers my ears, or I wear the hood on the hoody top. It has draw strings so I can pull it quite tight around my head. This is also very useful when it's raining (I will also wear a waterproof breathable jacket in the rain).

I did feel quite chilly on my warm up walk this morning but after I started running I soon warmed up. Sometimes I have taken the hoody jacket off and tied it around my waist but as I wear a reflective belt/chest strap now it's dark this will be less easy to do. Definitely layers are the way to go and if you have a jacket with pockets that will fit gloves and a hat that would help for when you warm up. I have a slightly thicker pair of running tights (by Karrimor) that have a windproof layer on the thigh area. This really helps keep the muscles warm to keep me going. However, I haven't used it for a couple of weeks as I'm running further and am warm most of the time, but will start to use again soon when the temp drops to 5C or less. I am wearing a vest top under my hoody running top currently, but have a long armed wicking shirt for when it gets colder.

Hope this helps!

Long sleeve running top and windproof jacket. In the winter I wear a beanie hat and running gloves.
