Foot pain - gutted!

I started week 8 on Friday and everything has been going well so far - really enjoying running, not missed a day - and now I have a pain in my left foot. It was twingy on Friday later in the day after the run but has got progressively worse over the weekend with the pain now moving to the bottom of my foot as a pretty continual dull ache. I also get a shooting pain now and then. I didn't hurt at all while I was actually running, just afterwards.

I'm gutted as I was on target to graduate by the end of next week, but I've now missed my first run ever and I'm really worried I won't complete.

Any advice what I can do to help it recover and prevent it happening again? I've just been running in my normal trainers which are ok for studio classes - should I invest in some proper running shoes? I had a gait analysis done last week and I do over pronate slightly.

I would say you should invest in better shoes. If you’ve been running more than very slowly you’ve probably been putting too much strain on it. Do you have a sense of how you land? You’ll need to rest and make sure that pain is gone before more running I think, or go and see a sports physio for proper advice, but when you’re getting back in try this m.youtube.com/watch?v=9L2b2... It’s a low impact style of running designed to avoid injury, and foot placement and landing style are key. Hope you recover quickly and can ease back on gently with this.

Thanks for your reply and the slow jogging info - I'll definitely give it a go. I probably am going too fast, although I don't think I land on my heels. The foot pain does make me realize though that I should be a bit more thoughtful about technique now I'm running for longer distances. Thanks again

I am also using the Japanese technic-it’s a brilliant idea

Welcome to the forum and well done on your progress.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5... and includes links to the NHS Sports injuries page

Personally speaking, I believe trying to run in ordinary trainers when you know that you overpronate is asking for trouble.

Rest until pain free and if it persists consult your GP or physio.

Good advice, thanks. I'll get myself back to Runners Need for a proper pair of running shoes before I go any further...
