Had a Colonoscopy 4 years ago (age 30) and now experiencing rectal bleeding again.

I am a slightly overweight 34 year old who eats pretty poorly. For the past 3-4 days my stool has been coated with a bright red blood, and the toilet water has been the same color.

1 out of every 4-5 stools are normal with no blood. I am using the restroom multiple times a day (almost trying to force myself to do so, so I can see if I am bleeding blood).

Just now I let out gas from my anus into the toilet with no stool and I looked at the toilet bowl and there was a stream of red blood that had left my anus when I passed gas.

Now I am panicking and worried that something is up as I already had scared myself about colon cancer 4 years ago, but the results were normal. I had 2 polyps that were removed 4 years ago, and some internal hemorrhoids but nothing else.

Should I be worried about this issue... could it just be internal hemorrhoids? If I was to pass gas, would hemorrhoids cause my anus to let out blood into the toilet bowl? Thank you!

Hello Teeftoof,

Thank you for sharing and I'm sorry to hear about your symptoms and anxiety.

When you had the colonoscopy and 2 polyps removed four years ago, when did the doctor say that you would be due to have your next colonoscopy?

The symptoms you are experiencing could be hemorrhoids, or a number of other conditions, including colorectal cancer, but the only way to know for certain is to get examined and possibly another colonoscopy.

Please contact your gastroenterologist to get an appointment.

Also, please let us know what they say. We're here for you!

I was wrong, I called my gastro and the colonoscopy was 30 months ago (not 4 years) and there were no polyps, just 2 internal hemorrhoids that were rubber banded off.

After making this post the blood stopped (only lasted 3-4 bowel movements) fast forward to today and the bleeding was in my last bowel movement. I have had 10+ bowel movements today but all are very small and often just releasing small amounts of stool.

Should I be worried about colon cancer if they told me there were no polyps and to come back after 10 years?

It was burning the rectum today when I passed a bowel with blood.

Its most likely just hemorroids, dude, colon cancer can take up to 10 years to develop and your colonscopy is still quite recent (not even 3 years) and was all clear.

If you had burning while passing stool, its most likely hemorroids or anal fissures, that explains the blood.

Do you have IBS?

Don't force yourself to use the restroom, you will only make them worse (you keep pushing) and never get better, just go when you feel like going.

It takes years to go through the whole cycle of cellular anomalies to grow uncontrollably. Colonoscopy is very accurate. Even more when the tumours are obstructive. Your issue sounds very much functional. Straining results into damage of inferior rectal veins, those can easily burst and start bleeding. The rectal canal is very dense muscle with many small veins. This sounds as non-malicious cause. To treat such funtional issues try to take on more exercise, eat more fibre and less salty/sweet/fatty meals that can irritate gut and bowel. Keep a journal of meals+symptoms. Get in touch with your gastroentrologist. If there are no other than bowel causes of your digestive disorders you will be possibly forwarded to nutritionist. Most importantly do not stress and try to improve your overall fitness. This generally helps against GI disorders as yours.
