Weak ankle....?

Hi all,

Has anyone had what seems like an ankle strain/sprain but slow to get better? It's a new symptom for me. What helped you? I went to Dr, wearing ankle brace and doing some exercises for strengthening. It's only is one ankle. I have cmt (genetic testing didn't show what kind), have weakness in calf muslces. I have some numbness in feet and toes a bit curled.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I have that same issue and the consultant and physio say it’s quite common due to weakness in the muscles around the ankle, with me it comes and goes but can be so painful that I cannot walk. Like you I have CMT so my condition and symptoms are the same as you describe. I do have a foot splint / brace for both legs and this does help.

Hi

It’s a very common side effect and was one of my first symptoms as I kept going over on my ankle and falling over which resulted in a sprain. Even now although I wear foot ups for drop foot my ankles swell. As the previous reply states it due to the weakening of the muscles around the ankle.

Hi. Yes I have the same problem. I have CMT 1a and have terrible ankle weakness in one ankle. It burns so much when I overuse it and then I have to use a brace for months because it becomes so week. It gets better very slowly but then it gets over used again (without the brace) and the whole process starts over.

Thank you. I am now understanding that It’s like a ‘flare up’. My ankle is slowly feeling better- took two months. Yikes.

Thank you very much for your feedback. Are those brands of splints you’re referencing?

Hello there,

I wear splints all the time (not in bed of course) my right ankle is weaker & does turn out when moving between bedroom n bathroom. It goes with the CMT I'm afraid.

Thank you. It’s disappointing to learn this but it makes sense.

Hi sorry to hear that. I used to have that problem, and eventually ended having an

Ankle fusion and it has worked for the last 30years. My granddaughter is starting to show symptoms as you. All the best Dave.

I suffered sprained ankles all my teenage life, and my ankles were very thin, they say bottle shaped. I wear safos now but after many a leg brace. They are great and support ankle weakness and drop foot,. nothing else helped as the weakness progressed.
