Hi, This may seem a strange post but can I please ask all if a low tolerance to alcohol (in other words a total lightweight i.e. one small glass of wine) is connected to CMT?? or maybe its just an age thing...
Thanks
Pauline

Hi Paulina,
yep going on my own experience (and vaguely recollecting others testimony) CMT seems to make you hyper-sensitive to alcohol resulting in a very low tolerance as you say.
I haven't investigated it in any detail, but as ethanol is neurotoxic it seems an obvious phenomenon.
I drink too much anyway. It does not seem to affect me
Hi, Paulina,
That's an interesting question. I have always had a low tolerance of alcohol. Even many years ago when I was an enthusiastic home wine-maker one small glass in a day two or three times a week was plenty, and now it's down to about a third of a small glass on the rare occasions I do drink.
My explanation to friends is "my balance is quite bad enough already".
Ysbryd's conjecture would certainly make good sense.
Hi Pauline, of course our normal lack of balance is only going to be exacerbated by any intoxicating substance, alcohol particularly. However, from my own personal experience, I don't believe CMT makes one generally any less tolerant to alcohol.
Bottoms up ...! Malcolm
Hello to Paulina,
It is my own personal opinion that Cmt disease, does not cause sufferer's any adverse effect's ?
We all have only one, and most short lifespan, in which to live : If you wish to enjoy a moderate drink, "then so be it" !
Yes !
It is accepted that Cmt's sufferers do have bad balance problems, in which they alone must personally accept, and manage:
Yes !
I also fully agree that you will not be the "top-alchol-drinker" at any external social event (due to you being aware that you are not at home)
However, please enjoy a drink with your friends, and family members with a moderate consumption of alcohol :
Our live's are simply far too short, so enjoy life whilst you can, and do not let this "dammed" Cmt Disease hold you back from enjoying the remainder of your own lifespan !
Best of luck + Good Health .....
John (Glasgow) .....
Hi, John,
Of course we are all different, but personally I don't actually enjoy feeling dizzy !
I can't tolerate it at all but put it down to my pain relief...
Hello Pauline,
I've never thought of it that way but I have a total intolerance to alcohol...I have been a CMT sufferer all my life, now 70...I have always just assume it was a personal thing, but I cannot take any quantity of it at all without feeling unwell...dizzy, squiffy...all that stuff...so I have always been teetotal.
Think of all the money you save though...
i have a very low tolerance to alcohol and have done for many years to the effect now that I dont contemplate drinking at all plus its also causes me to have severe insomnia and also affects my sister the same way who also have CMT
I don't drink alcohol simply because I get terrible painful muscle spasms associated with my CMT if I do. In soft drinks Coke Cola is the worst offender. The pain is so dreadful its not worth it for me, even though some people think I am not being sociable, but its about my pain management.
Hi Pauline,
Out of interest, Izabella Wentz listed the following as clues of Thiamine or B1 deficiency and it includes feeling worse after drinking alcohol: "Clues that you may have a thiamine deficiency: having Hashimoto’s or another autoimmune condition; IBS; fatigue; low blood pressure; low stomach acid; feeling worse after drinking alcohol or after taking L-glutamine; brain fog; adrenal or blood sugar issues."

I hope this helps!
I don’t know if it has anything to do with cmt, but I have wondered if it does. I have always had a EXTREMELY LOW tolerance to alcohol and many other things. I wonder if they have done some research on that and cmt patients.
Also recently i have noticed that when I do drink ( rarely drink, maybe 2 or 3 times a year) the next day my muscles contract very severely and my body is completely stiff, the pain is unbearable, this goes on for 3 to 4 days. I’m
