hi everyone, just wondering if anyone else has suffered these side effects, l have felt very poorly 😢 banging headache, fatigue, and shivering in this heat,much worse than covid vaccine, l have spent all afternoon in bed, l met an old school friend for lunch a d couldn't wait get home and in bed , l have to have another in October!!!! Wow, sun_flower, that's miserable. I often, too, have bad reactions to just about any kind of shot, but usually only the first 24 hours after. Ibuprofen and rest is what I do. And I never schedule a shot close to any event I want to attend. 🙂 Sandra

Hi my first non live Shinrex I was ok, the second one I was I’ll shivering all night couldn’t get warm it was awful. The next morning I felt a little better. Good luck with the second shot and hope it’s not as bad. Ros 🤞

Yes. Worse than many of the vaccines I have had. Second one was better for me.

I had the second Shingrix shot last week. Had slight headache, very slight chills, a little achy all over. Lasted 2 days or less. I took one Naproxin (Aleve) and it did help. I think the first shot was a little bit worse. The pharmacist said that often one shot has more side affects than the other, and it could be in either order. (I'm the spouse of a CLL patient, and she had the Shingrix shots prior to developing CLL).

While it is disappointing that some experience rather severe side effects from the Shingrix vaccinations compared to other vaccinations, believe me, they pale into insignificance compared to the pain from shingles. I developed a shingles rash from the top of my thigh to the sole of my foot and my entire leg feels like it's burning at times throughout the day and night. I've been taking valaciclovir, gabapentin and Panadol for two weeks and together they don't control the pain. I've been struggling to walk at times. So anyone feeling put off by the Shingrix side effects, please reconsider. (It has only been available in Australia since June 2021 and it's expensive, but worth it. I doubt that I would respond to any vaccinations to produce antibodies, as I only began to produce detectable B cells in my blood tests 5 months ago, back in March.)

Neil I agree with you. Having Shingrix and side effects for a day is no comparison to having shingles which can go on for weeks and can leave all sorts of complications which I have experienced. Hazel UK

Hi Neil, am so sorry to hear this. Have so far not had shingles but have had shingrix. Had strong very unexpected reaction to first one with shooting stabbing pains in arm, swollen and painful injection site and headaches etc. Was dreading 2nd one only to find barely a reaction at all! Hello Neil. I'm sorry to hear about your Shingles experience. I hope it has gotten better (I see your post was 4 months ago).

I had my first Shingles vaccine and, after 6 days, my arm swelled nearly 1/2 inch high from the top of my shoulder to my elbow and 4&1/2 inches across. Very hot, red, itchy hives. It took 3 weeks to go away. Topical hydrocortisone did nothing. I had allergy testing for the Shingrex vaccine. The dermatologist said if the test reaction measured "3", he would give me the second vaccine...the result was "8". Meaning a second vaccine could kill me.

I now have had cold sores on my lip for a week. Using Abreva with success. Wound is scabbed over nicely & swelling is gone EXCEPT I have tiny swollen lymph nodes on the same side as the sores. Lymph swelling is a bit lessened each day and nearly gone. Should this be treated or is it good to let my immune system do the work? I've gotten lip herpes all my life but never had lymph nodes swell before. I'm a bit concerned herpes may activate my cll....

I'm in W&W & doing fine. Also, tomorrow, our puppy gets live vaccines. Suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks Neil.

Bad luck with the shingles vaccination. I'm in the same situation with tetanus shots.

Lymph nodes near infection sites swell as a natural part of our body's adaptive response to infection. Dendritic cells (mature monocytes in our tissues), take parts of the virus, bacteria, etc., (with epitopes, the parts our lymphocytes can recognise) to the nearby nodes and present them to helper T cells in the germinal centres of the nodes. T and B cells that develop matching receptors to the epitopes propagate, building up enough to produce antibodies (from maturing B cells called plasma cells) and memory B and T cells, plus some activated T cells that seek out and destroy virus infected body cells. That's what causes the nodes to swell. They return to their normal size when newly made lymphocytes have moved away, to fight the infection, make antibodies in our bone marrow, or circulate for years to decades later in our blood so that they can detect and respond to future infections.

An earlier infection epstein barr (EBV or mononucleosis- 'kissing disease') can subsequently cause some cancers, including some lymphomas, such as Burkitt's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease, but the association with CLL is questionable. This subsequent cancer development also very rare, given around 90% of the world test positive for having had EBV. Cold sores are usually caused by one of the herpes viruses; HSV-1. It's more common when we have CLL, because of our compromised immunity. See your doctor if your cold sores don't clear up, though it sounds like that's now looking good. I would think it quite unlikely that this will activate your CLL.

Sorry, without knowing what live vaccinations your puppy is having, I can't say whether you should isolate from your puppy for a while or not. Please ask the vet and share their answer here.

We just returned from the vet. Happy healthy puppy! She said they have several clients with immune compromised systems. To date, there have been no reports of illness by these pet owners. Important to know, some vaccinations our pets receive are live viruses. But, again, as far as she knows, no known illnesses transferred from vaccinated pets.

Neil, our Vet contacted the manufacturer of the vaccines our puppy received today. Stated these are modified live vaccines (weakened viruses) that have not effected any immune compromised people that they are aware of. The vaccines were: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Paravovirus, Parainfluenza, & Corona. She stated the Paravovirus is live but, the manufacturer states no known human infections from pets reported. Our pup also received Rabies vaccine. It is a killed virus.

After vaccination, they did recommend hand washing after each contact & keeping animals away from your face for a month, just as an extra layer of protection. We do that & more anyway.

Vet also stated, Bordetella vaccine is one to watch out for. It's also known as "kennel cough". That could be harmful to us. If your pet is not around other animals or kenneled, this vaccination is not required.

She is also going to mail me the insert, for the vaccinations, to hopefully answer other questions you may have.

Please ask if there are any other questions you have for our Vet. She is very willing to help as she cares as much for her animals as she does for their immune compromised owners.

Unfortunately, I too am suffering from shingles at the moment. Like Neil, I can’t believe the effects of the vaccination are anything like as bad as the disease. I have now been suffering for just over a week and it has affected all of my right arm, and the right side of my face and head. Pain is horrific. My GP put me on Aciclovir and I have to take pain relief every four hours. Very unpleasant particularly in this hot weather. I had asked for a vaccination when my husband had one, when he was 70 a year ago on the NHS. However they told me I would have to wait until I was 70 - of course I wish now I have made more fuss about it!

I too got Shingles 8 weeks ago on left hand side of chest adjacent to your heart. I too was prescribed Aciclovir, but 3 weeks later after having a postponed covid Moderna jab, got a chest infection The pain when I sneezed or coughed was excruciating & worrying as it was in the heart area.

I was prescribed Amocycillin and a further dose of,Aciclovir as a new rash appeared on my upper chest. I am (cross fingers) now on the mend, but can still feel mild pain if I sneeze. I am awaiting a decision from my CLL specialist as to whether she will approve a Shingrix vaccine for me later this year as I am under 70.

I also had the same sort of reaction to the needle and need another now not looking forward to it but after reading Neil’s post I will put up with it I don’t want the real thing. Good luck for the second needle let’s hope our first was the worst.

I got shingles 5 years ago after chemo and having my spleen removed. I still have severe pain 24 hours a day. A few days of discomfort from the vaccine is worth not getting shingles.

I had Shingrex 2 months ago, and at first had no reaction at all. No fever, no headache, not even a sore arm. But 2 days later I was hit with deep fatigue, that lasted for weeks. It's slowly wearing off and I can't be sure it was the Shingrex, but the next dose is now due and I've been putting it off...

Hearing AussieNeil 's experience (and other people's) is making me think I must get the second dose though.

Sorry to hear this. I also had a bad reaction to My first Shingrix. Felt fairly rotten worse than the covid vaccines. I had to pause treatment for two weeks as it made me neutropenic. Still got to have the second one and have been putting it off for holidays etc.

When I took the shingles vaccine, I felt absolutely awful, sun_flower. Fever, chills, body aches, etc.. To me, it was much worse than the Covid. It only lasts a day or so. I hope you start feeling better very soon.

Sorry to hear of the side effects which you are experiencing. I had both Shringrix jabs in the latter part of 2021 and fortunately had no side effects whatsoever ( I also had no side effects with any of the COVID vaccines - though I did have a strong antibody response) . I hope it works ! The experiences of others who have had shingles I think make it a worthwhile thing to have done. It's now available for free within the NHS in England - though technically only for over 70's . I got it before that on the basis of a consultant recommendation and my GP signing a waver. I hope that you start to feel better soon. Keith

You are not alone I promise. I was actually in bed and miserable for a full 24 hours and then it got better with each day. When it was over it was like a light switch.. Hope you feel better soon!!

Yup, I had chills, very exhausted tiredness, and a bad arm rash from my second non live Shringrix shot. The first shot was just a sore arm..I also broke out with a terrible case of the shingles in 2019, about 3 weeks after my CAR T clinical trial for my aggressive FNHL. That was no fun! My oncologist said I was very close to getting hospitalized. I hope you feel better real soon! I am also on Valtrex each day
