CLL and the Coronavirus vaccine

Wondering if the upcoming vaccine will be safe for CLL sufferers to get?

Asked my haemotologist that very same question during my telephone consultation two days ago. Unfortunately did not receive a definitive answer. She told me that the haemotology department had not received any instructions to the contrary, but that she would ask the question of 'the experts', whoever they may be. It is an inert, rather than a live vaccine, and so should not be an issue to us CLLers. Once I get a definitive answer, I'll let you know.

We may not know for a long time if it's safe for us. It probably wasn't tested on immune compromised people. Going for my check up Tuesday. Will see what my hematologist says.

I don't think I would take it right away when it comes out. Most drugs take 3-5 years to develop. This was way too fast in my opinion. Many don't believe in vaccines at all so there will be a lot of people that never get it. Frustrating 😟

There are many different platforms for vaccine development available and tested some of which indeed take a long time for testing such as Live attenuated and inactivated virus vaccines. Live attenuated is certainly contraindicated for us and other immune suppressed patients. To the best of my knowledge the two most advanced vaccines are RNA vaccines which is a relatively new platform and we have to see the interim analysis (Modena) likely next week and final analysis (Pfizer) hopefully within 2-3 weeks. We have to wait for the final safety analysis for both trials but the effectiveness was truly astounding at 90% if this holds true in the final analysis. I do not see a reason why this vaccine would be contraindicated for us since it has no live component but will discuss this with my hematologist of course. I am more concerned that we with compromised immune system would have a blunted response to vaccination as we usually do. Personally I would take this vaccine provided the final safety data is reasonable.

OSU oncology stated two weeks ago that a vaccine would be available for me to take in January, 2021. Also, stated that none of the vaccines being tested are “live”.
