To my knowledge, for cholesterol check to be accurate you need to have fasted since the night before the test. Otherwise it will give a false result. You can drink water on the morning of the test. Usually, if you ask for the check at the time they would ask when you last ate and advise you of the likely accuracy or otherwise. Best bet is play safe and don't eat.
I think if you want a really accurate breakdown of lipid levels into LDL, HDL and triglycreides you have to fast.
This is because triglyceride levels rise after you have eaten. The finger prick type tests that supermarket pharmacies offer only measure total cholesterol and you don't need to fast.
