Yes, walking and cycling are good for you so please go ahead and do it. There - done it. And saved the taxpayer 10's of thousands of pounds.

OK - more detail... Feel free to walk but try to stick to the pavement, local parks, generally anywhere off the road.

Cycling. You'll need to buy a bike. After that - stick to the roads or cycle paths.

That ok?

Cynical I afraid there, it's an investment in YOUR future health and welfare, but if you want to stay on the sofa that's up to you. Cyclist have just as much right to the road as anyone, they're not polluting the atmosphere and don't give us that old "I pay my road fund tax"

Is a "barrier to implement intervention that promote cycling and walking" this awful weather we've been having and the fact that my very expensive umbrella blew inside out going up the hill to work?

Sorry to be flippant, but jargon annoys me...good idea though.

Sorry about the jargon, but that's what NICE are like. Biggest barrier is Highway Engineers who can only think, vehicle, vehicle, vehicle. Roads need to be adjusted to be cycle & walking friendly particularly junctions & roundabouts. I'm feeling great because I've ridden my mountain bike at my local trail centre for the first time in 16 months. Get out and by a bike guys and some wet weather and thermal gear #Goretex!

Actually, I think the biggest barrier is the police who just don't enforce traffic laws any more. It's been ages since I saw a vehicle moved on from parking too close to a junction, across the end of a footpath or in a cycle lane, for example. This has a knock-on effect where most highway engineers won't even propose certain things like proper junction sweeps because it's absolutely required and the police say they will object or simply not enforce the necessary parking restrictions. The lack of respect then pervades the general motor-driving community because if the police ignore people on foot or bicycles, then surely everyone else can? Bah!

I think the attitude that produces statements like "Organisations not registered as stakeholders are not able to comment" is also a bit of a problem, as there a far more pro-motor-vehicle organisations than pro-walking, pro-cycling or generally pro-citizen ones and many of them see people as competing for road space with their vehicles. Who elects gov.uk? Organisations or individuals?

Good trainers and an I -pod help us urban walkers as well.

I understand why, but very cynical views DakCB, Sustrans and other cycling organisations will be lobby, but if we all throw-up our arms in dispare our views will never be taken account of.

Also take your point Aliwally, but iPods can be dangerous if you can't hear the traffic!

Another thing that prevents people cycling to their local shops & facilities is security - we need somewhere to park our bikes securely so they don't get pinched. I wouldn't leave my pride & joy outside anywhere without it being properly locked up otherwise its going to rapidly disappear!
