I have sugar & cholesterol of about 7.... - Cholesterol Support
I have sugar & cholesterol of about 7.2; HDl of 1.7.Doc put me on 40mg statin but i had liver probs on Lamisil. Can i do it with diet?
Diet can help, plenty of fibre with oat bran sprinkled on your morning cereal and plenty of supper foods kiwi fruit, grapes etc. Ask your GP to prescribe Omacor for you and try another statin. I'm on rusavastin which I was ordinarily taking ever other day to avoid side effects, but now I've adjusted to it I take every day. Hope that helps?
Thanks, Omacor sounds interesting. I have had the most serious side effect with every drug i've ever taken for anything so i think i've a very sensitive system - so i'd like to prove i can do it without a statin at all if possible. i have low blood pressure but am overweight so there's a lot to go at. I am a fan of Adele Davis but the whole milk and butter vs skimmed and special fats is tricky with high cholesterol.
Sounds like you may be diabetic or insulin resistant. Lowering carbohydrate to a minimum will certainly improve cholesterol and blood sugars. However, if carbs are lowered you must increase fats or you will be hungry all the time. Whether you are happy doing this depends whether or not you believe that butter, cheese, etc is the heart killer we are told they are. Start some research and make your own mind up. As usual I suggest you start here:
If you have high blood sugars then the last thing you want to do is eat loads of fruit (it contains sugar)......Youwould need to look at which fruits you can manage with, and cut down on your carbs......have a look at diet doctor as suggested.
I have high Cholesterol. am a T2 diabetic, and have CAD, and these combined make diet choices difficult at first but you can get round it.
Good luck
I would say this would be very difficult to manage with diet. If you want to try this you need a diet drawn up by a dietician who knows everything about you. A good diet is usually good for everyone but if you already have sugar there are some fruits which shoulg only in small amounts or avoided altogether because of their natural sugar content. Speak to your Doctor again and be sure in your mind whether you can restrict yourself to a very strict diet!
I mentioned fruit because that is one of the main things people think about in a healthy diet - especially having fruit instead of sweets, biscuits and all other snacky rubbish. A good diet is a balanced diet - balanced to suit the person and their condition.
Thanks for all the comments. Had a good look at diet doctor and it seems worth a try. I dont feel like fighting my own doctor who got a bit stroppy, so i think i'll keep a low profile. I already believe in the full fat milk, butter and red meat - so it must have been the biscuits, bread and rice that let me down! Really does help to have people to talk to - I've been really fed up about it on my own.
I think I made this mistake with fruit, thinking I could eat as much of it as I like and it wouldn't matter. I also have glucose levels hovering around high end of normal to impaired fasting. My levels definitely go up with every pound I put on. I have to be absolutely ruthless when I want to lose weight, it seems to be the only way I can do it. Small bowl of cereal for breakfast, home made salad for lunch modest portion of meat and two veg in the evening. Restrict wine to weekends only and wow does it taste good on a Friday evening, after swimming!
Good luck.
Today so far - 2 slices bacon and an egg for brekky, mackerel, lettuce, tomato and Greek yoghurt for lunch and a few almonds in between and I'm stuffed full.
I'll let you know which way the weight is going. I'm seeing the nurse on Friday for a 40 min first diabetes check - i wonder if she can check blood sugar by then?
Nurse says i can try diet to get sugar and cholesterol down for 3 months and they will look again. The actual original results were HDl 1.7, LDl 4 and 3 month blood sugar of 7.1. She didnt say total cholesterol or triglycerides. I have lost 3kg since docs appointment 2 weeks ago on the 'diet doctor' diet (dietdoctor.com/lchf) - meat, cheese, full fat yogh, salads, green veg and berries. Easy at home but tricky when out. Feel very positive now!
