Statin for over 60's?

It is in the news, I read an article in the copy of the daily mail today. Reading it can be confusing!, we have to act according to our body reaction to medication. After a lot of research I decided not to take statin and I am 70.

I also stopped taking prescribed Statins at the beginning of the year. After one year on them I had muscle pain and dizziness. The only reason given for putting me on them in the first place was because I fitted a profile; weight, age etc. Since I stopped taking them my liver function has improved, cholesterol levels are fine too.

Mass medication has to be wrong.

I was on statin for years & never got down to the right level as soon as i stooped & went on to Niacin & dandelion Root extract . My levels drooped to normal. Check out Dandelion root extract Great stuff

I stopped taking them too late. Now I have myopathy. It's a form of myositis, a muscle infection, and it is irriversable. I'll have this muscle condition till the day I die. Two flights of steps or 800 meters and my leg muscles turn to rubber. I have trouble carrying my bike up from the cellar, 8 steps. I can still cycle, but the extreme pain in my Glutius Maxumus is "troublesome".

Yes, a pain in the arse.

You have been warned.

Literally, a pain in the arse!

The results from Statin intolerance (which is what my body is) are Myopathy leading to muscular dystrophy, or, if you are lucky, Myolagy, which is just the pain.

A blood test will show Myopathy if it is there.

There are three differnt types of this Glutus Maximus pain. To find out which one you have, you must have a biopsy.

I can hardly wait.

well, best of luck.

I shall not be going back onto statins, that is for sure!

What's your life style, eating habits? Sport, married single....

Hi Eraruc,

I am reasonably active but do not work out at the gym, more gardening and walking. I have reduced my alcohol intake to just a bottle or two of wine a week, non smoker - never smoked, and eat healthily for most of the time. I have cut down on carbohydrates, not low carb but lower carbs, I have lost over 3 stones since January but BMI still says I am over weight so I know I would like to lose another stone. BP OK and cholesterol, liver function, kidney function all satisfactory since I stopped taking statins and was tested again in May this year. I have never had any heart problems.stroke/heart attack. Married and I do all the cooking:-) Hope this helps you whatever you are considering doing.

I only want to help. Gardening is not exercise. Walking is okay, but you need some form of exercise that causes your circulation to speed up. (Sex is also good but...)

I prefer cycling, I don't own a car, I have an HGV licence but at 72 I have decided on writing as a late career. I self-publish my sci-fi, crime and tales of the Holcaust on Amazon, as e-books and paperbacks.

Now, where was I. Your circulation, your blood travelling through your veins and arteries... You never smoked, you drink moderately, you don't live alone so you seem to be physically and mentally well off.

I suggest cycling; go with your wife and cycle for an hour... or two... or thee. Take water with you and chat, if you are too much out of breath to speak then you are either out of condition (the blood not reachiung your capillieries, flushing your muscles ...) or you are cycling too fast.

I got into such a condition that cycing 100 miles was no problem. So, don't give up on your gardening and buy a bike, any bike. I have three; one for shopping (with a basket) an off-road mountrain bike and a racer.

Cheers.

Bill.

Hi Bill,

Not sure what you are trying to help me with?

I STOPPED taking statins and my health has improved.

I have lost weight and changed my diet and my blood tests, cholesterol and BP are all fine.

My gardening IS exercise, hard landscaping is not the same as picking out a few daisies from the lawn:-)

I don't need to buy a bike, as you have suggested, as it would be like endangering my life around here! And my wife, who is 74, is certainly not up for riding tandem! :-)

Bill, I responded to your reply to my comment about coming off of Statins so perhaps you have got me mixed up with another post?

Take care

John

You are welcome, John. Take care and buy an ergometer.

Check out coQ10 if you are not already taking it in one form or another. Also look into turmeric and its close cousin ginger. Not only are these powerful painkillers but their anti-inflammatory properties can also help repair muscle damage

I don't know if you might find anything of help here newmediaexplorer.org/chris/...

Also check out rebounding as an alternative to cycling. It has been proven to be the best form of exercise. One benefit is its ability to halt and reverse muscle degeneration/damage.

Corrected link nhs.uk/news/2016/06June/Pag... - so it's mainly some long-established lipid-hypothesis-is-false people reviewing existing studies, not new research.

As usual for the deniers, they will have discarded any Familial-Hypercholesterol-specific studies as not reflecting the general population and I suggest that few with FH will reach 60 unmedicated, so this review seems uninformative for those with hereditary high cholesterol.

Thank you for the link. At the end of the day we need to question and medication and check for side effects before taking the medication, jut one or many medication three times a day. Food intake control and help towards a healthy life..

My life style change, daily visit to gym in the morning. Porridge with cinnamon and honey or just sugar or just salt for breakfast. Lunch green leaf veg, cheese, tomato, olive oil for lunch or 50/30 bread and butter. Dinner what ever my wife cooks, fresh food, rice only two times a week. I do take a drink every evening!!!

I am fitter and healthy, only time will tell, the only medication I take is for allergy as I am allergic to salicylate.
