Research Funding.

So, there you are in the research annex of a prestigious university. Newly minted PHD on the wall and time on your hands. You have a burning ambition to alleviate is some small way the suffering of humanity but there’s a problem.

Money!

Funding for research is fiercely competitive, and internal resources are extremely limited, so it’s left to external sources with deep pockets who share your concerns to pick up the slack.

So, there I am sitting in my research annex, AKA living room, also with a burning ambition to add my two penn’orth and hooked up to the web.

The previous evening I’d watched Jamie Oliver’s ‘Sugar Rush’ on Channel 4. Like him or loath him it’s well worth a watch on catchup. Anyway, amongst my daily Google Alerts this dropped into my inbox:

laht.com/article.asp?Articl...

Hmm, interesting, and worth a little digging methinks. The study came from…‘International Life Sciences Institute, ILSI, a non-profit (sic) dedicated to advancing scientific understanding in the areas such as nutrition…’

Sounds prestigious, and looking at their website it’s very impressive and must cost a packet to maintain:

ilsi.org/Pages/HomePage.aspx

However, we need to do a little more digging to establish bona fides, so with a few more clicks of the mouse I found the 2014 annual report for N. America:

ilsiextra.org/AnnualReport/...

On the right you’ll see ‘Trustees and Members’, it’s worth more than a cursory glance, and might just make you re-evaluate your opinion of the Latin America Herald Tribune article above. The ‘Latin America’ tag is particularly cogent here if you have, or are going to watch, ‘Jamie’s Sugar Rush’.

Unbiased research?

As ever; follow the money…

NB After posting this early this morning; at 8.46 this dropped into my inbox:
