Please read this article:

Cost per day and the on to a month.

Heart UK promoted another manufacturers product last year.

The cereal that claims to be as good as STATINS at lowering your cholesterol - but will set you back £1 a bowl.

Statin is taken before going to bed and this is breakfast, I am not sure how this works!

hope this information helps.

oooh I clicked on a Daily Mail link for the first time in ages. I feel dirty. That sidebar is a disgrace.

Anyway, it's beta-glucans again. If you're not sure how they work, try en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta_... (usual wikipedia cautions apply) and note this works best as breakfast because "For maximal absorption, oral β(1,3)-D-glucan should be taken on an empty stomach."

I wonder if it has an effect for rather longer than some statins - Simvastatin has a typical half-life of less than 2 hours IIRC, hence taking it in the evening.

"It contains 3g of beta-glucan, which is great. Porridge typically only contains 1g."

Well that depends on the Porridge. If you make it from HEART-UK-approved Mornflake Oatbran (available in major supermarkets), then 53g dry ingredient will contain 3g of beta-glucan (I pour on about 200ml boiling water to make a porridge and add some fruit).

Have a look at Heart UK approved "OatWell".

Problem with the link Bala is it is the Daily Mail. No offence if you believe what this paper says about anything.

BUT by reading between the lines it is indicating that it has taken the ingredient from oats that helps lower cholesterol and produced it in a concentrate form and added it to a breakfast cereal.

Could work i suppose? and that is why it is a good question to ask.

As it is not a direct substitute for Statins it would not have to be taken at night as it must work in a different way like other food related things that help lower Cholesterol.
