My Child is a Monkey.

Just been watching a program on Five Star with the above title.

Not, you realise, because I have any affection for the damned things, more a morbid fascination for the human condition epitomised by Mr. Kyle or ‘Embarrassing Bodies’.

One telling part of the documentary was when one owner took her ‘pet’ to the vet. This animal, whilst looking normal i.e. much as you’d see in an Amazonian jungle; had problems. Straight away I thought ‘diabetes’ (to myself for fear of my family's usual eye rolling). Sure enough after blood tests the diagnosis was confirmed. Hardly surprising, as the monkey was being fed the average American diet. Neither was it surprising when the vet asked whether the spaghetti she was to feed it that night was ‘whole grain’. The answer was ‘no’, and she wouldn’t be feeding it the ‘regular white stuff’ (she did!). Talk about mirroring! What takes us many years to develop can be duplicated in just a few with our simian cousins.

Pan in to a monkey sanctuary - filled with animals who had savaged their previous owners and the majority of whom were diabetic.

Whipping out the trusty Mac I Googled ‘Diabetes in monkeys’:

See where I’m going with this?
