The title of the BMJ article is "A statin a day keeps the doctor away". I always like to read the original research if possible. The tone of this paper is surprisingly jokey.

The results are hypothetical, or, 'modelled' from already known statistics on the effects of taking statins or of eating fruit. I was surprised to read that only about 30% of the population manage to eat the recommended amount of fruit/veg a day. I guess an apple a day might make quite a difference to some people.

Your link has the Daily Mail in the address. So do you think i would seriously read or believe anything from that rag.

As much as some people think that Statins are a product of the devil there are many others who don't. There are many who put themselves up as being experts on this forum when in fact they are not. In the end it is your life that is at stake. But sure an apple a day plus as many other fruits and veg you can eat a day is always good for you.

I was diagnosed with high cholesterol, 8.2, about 6 weeks ago. I have added an apple and a garlic pill to my daily diet. I have cut out as much sugar from my diet as I can. I will be tested again in March and have high hopes that this will remove the issue. (I'm still not convinced that cholesterol is the real villain)

Why anyone would opt for a future on statins before trying the above low impact alternative is a mystery to me, especially when the weight of evidence that statins are useless in the great majority is growing rapidly

All,

Thanks for your response.

I was on statin for three months, this was to undo the damage from high cholesterol according to my GP!. I am not sure if I need to have been on statin. Awaiting report from specialist after stress test. My body is very different now, strong pain all over! this is my experience.

Only trying to pass on what I have read!. Take it or leave it.

Humans need to address food intake.

At my recent medication review I told the GP I was cynical about the benefits claimed for statins,( I had side effect of weariness for the two months I took them) and then asked how convinced she was about cholesterol levels/cardio vascular disease incidence. Her reply was that it was the conventional wisdom but she said it without confidence. When I said that I, although not a medic, found much evidence on-line that showed this "wisdom" may be without a sound basis she said "You know, you may well be right! I've had some patients with low cholesterol having heart disease and others with very high readings carrying on for years." For a GP to say that something must be wrong. Wasn't there a quote on that Australian programme looking at Statins "It's Marketing, not Medicine."?

Hello,

I thank you for your response. I am not an expert!, my experience of last 24 months speak.

Satin as a secondary medication after a heart attack is necessary!, not as a primary medication!

There are people with cholesterol values in double digit living a healthy life.

Hi Bala. What you say bears out what I have read in various places. I have been trying to improve my diet (I consume vast quantities of carbs) but have just eaten a huge Christmas meal with my family, so will need a good few hours exercise tomorrow to restore some sort of balance! I wish you, and all contributors, a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year

Apples and nearly all fruit are just sugar delivery systems and are really not that healthy, there are next to no vitamins and nutrients in most, they are a kinder sugar than the processed white stuff though.
