Although penicillin is bad for me personally(I'm allergic to it), it has undoubtedly saved many, many lives. I am unable to tolerate statins, but realise that for those with FH they may be life saving drugs. We are all different and I think the danger lies in mass prescription of any type of drug for financial or political reasons. We need to ensure there are alternatives and use drugs as medication only when they are essential and alternative routes to health are not available.

That is such a generalisation. All drugs are designed to help cure illnesses - otherwise drug companies would not spend vast amounts of money researching these. Aspirin is a generic name for a naturally occurring substance obtained from willow bark. Would you prefer to go out into the wild - or go to the local chemist? Aspirin has helped millions of people as have statins as has penicillin. They do not help everyone. They do help the majority. I prefer to take a natural substance where possible in preference to a manufactured drug but, as I inherited FH, I have had to accept that natural products, although they do help, have not managed to keep my cholesterol levels low enough to be safe. Statins have - and, for me, with no adverse side effects at all.

But Statin do not cure an illness otherwise why would you have to take them for the rest of your life? Very few drugs that are produced these days cure an illness, they only keep the symptoms in check, otherwise millions of people through out the world would be cured of most if not all the major illnesses as in the case of smallpox. Drug companies are happy to spend vast sums of money as they know that the profits will be Billions a year as in the case of Statins

Does anybody know where the word "statin" came from?

It comes from an amalgamation of plant sterols (st.....) and the chemicals that are used to produce it (atin) Sterols were found in a plant from the far east, I believe, and great excitement ensued when they thought they had found the answer to everyone's prayers to help us all live longer without having to change our ways!!

They were produced by nearly every drug company going because they saw it as a cheap alternative to the expensive post heart attack and stroke medication that they are expected to produce when demanded. It was seen as a cheap way to make money and keep people alive. To heck with the side effects. Just take painkillers (we make them too and they are cheap!) to help with those!!
