Simply put this occurs when cells in the body become insensitive to the action of insulin.

Generally speaking the cells become unable to remove primarily glucose from the blood. It comes about by the hammering of the system with carbohydrate (starches, especially processed), and overconsumption of sugar of which easily the worst culprit is carbonated drinks.

People with the syndrome will typically be very overweight or obese and if left unattended will lead to type 2 diabetes and the horrors that go along with it.

Cutting back drastically on carbohydrate often cures the condition, and even people on Metformin (increases cellular sensitivity to insulin) are able to cut the dose.

Oh, and if you increase healthy fats at the same time as cutting the carbohydrate you will lose weight without feeling hungry.

You can be insulin resistant and not over weight. Asian people who eat a lot of polished white rice can be insulin resistant and slim. Insulin resistance, high cholesterol, high BP and weight gain can all be caused by eating too much sugar and processed carbohydrates, which affect the insulin in your body. This is metabolic syndrome. The longer you have eaten too many refined carbs, the more likely you are to have problems, but it varies from person to person. It will also depend on how much exercise you do.

Yes, I had it. Mike's definition is right. Luckily it is reversible by losing weight and taking more exercise and I do agree with cutting back on the carbs
