Perhaps you could aim for somewhere inbetween? Just keep to unprocessed food if you can, as bigleg said. Cut down on carbohydrates a bit and have some butter occasionally. Eat more veg than fruit.
If you need carbohydrates, have a look for low glycemic index/loading. diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-di...
I have found that if I eat many carbohydrate I put on weight, I am not active enough to need many.
But definitely give up sugar and all foods containing added sugar, apart from the very occasional treat.
Oh dear! I didn't read all the info on the diabetes site, their snack advice is not good. Like you I don't snack and wasn't expecting advice on it. Thanks for pointing it out bigleg.
Sorry Bala, please ignore.
Hi,
For nearly two years have been trying to understand food to reduce blood sugar and cholesterol. Thanks to Q&A, I am slowly getting there. If I can bring down my cholesterol without any medication in the next two months it will be an achievement. The Canadian documentary helped me a lot to understand better on food intake. Exercise (30 minutes) every week end and taking the heart rate to 128 every week end has helped to lower HbA1C test values!!!
I am so confused as well, I have always eaten plenty off fresh fruit and veg, never eat red meat, even when i go out for a meal its always salad and my kids buy me fruit instead of sweets, never fry anything, I have done that all my life. Had a heart attack at the age off 54 and now have to take 80 mg of Statins, when I had my Heart Attack last year colestrol was 7.19. Where did I go wrong diet wise ??
You didn't.
Sadly, food is simply one of the risk factors leading to a heart attack. Genetics, weight, diabetes, exercise, smoking, alchohol, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels are just as important.
