A movie recommendation

Hi everyone, A few days ago I came across the 2020 movie 'The Father' and, I wanted to flag it up to anyone who hasn't already seen it, as an absolutely brilliant portrayal of what it must feel like to be the victim of dementia or of losing cognition for any reason.

It stars Anthony Hopkins, who gives his customary excellent performance as an elderly man going through the confusion of losing cognition on his journey with dementia.

It's not a fun watch, or an action movie by any means, and of course, as is the case with dementia, there is no happy ending. It's quite intense and at times a bit puzzling to follow, but that's because it's portraying confusion and the delusions that can come for someone with a cognitive problem.

If you've ever wondered what it might feel like to be for the cared for in these circumstances, rather than the carer, this is an excellent watch. It really gives insight, and struck a chord with me. It's available to stream on several of the subscription services, so if you come across it at any time, I definitely recommend giving it a try.

Thank you for this. Where can I find it, is it on DVD or Netflix?

Hi Bifield, It's not currently available on Netflix but is available to stream on Amazon (for no extra cost if you have prime membership) and also as a DVD. I have read that it's available on Apple but I don't subscribe to that, so that's only speculatively.

Thank you Callendersgal, our daughter has seen it I believe. I will think about it but tend not to watch films like that. I’ve heard it’s good though. Enjoy your day xxx💜❤️💕😘

It's certainly not a cheerful watch sassy59 but a magnificent performance from Anthony Hopkins (and Olivia Colman as his daughter too). But of course it's not for everyone! 😊

Hi Callendersgal, thank you for this. I have heard good things about the film and I will definitely look out for it. I think it is really good to try to gain an insight into what it's like to be a cared for person as quite often they don't have a voice or know how to express their feelings. It must be so frustrating and upsetting..

Wishing everyone a good weekend ahead.

I hope you manage to track it down and to enjoy it Helen. Anthony Hopkins was deserving of his 'best actor Oscar for this. I found myself drawn right into the world he portrayed.
