My daughter is 8 and has C3 glomerulonephropathy she’s been on prednisone for two years and is set to come off them this April . She leaks 3+ blood and 3+ protein. Her immune system is nonexistent and I’m looking for advise as to keep her off school or not . The town we live in has had a confirmed case on Coronavirus and 6 more suspected already . What should I do ? I’ve phoned her consultant and they are just advising everyone to phone the hotline for answers

Thankyou

I think you have to do whatever makes you comfortable. The doctors simply don’t know. They don’t know how at-risk certain types of patients might be, especially children. But I have been hearing from more and more C3G families that they are being advised to stay home as much as possible, because it is better to be cautious.

If you feel most comfort keeping her home, then do it. I think that decision is justified considering the circumstances and the infection being in your community. Looking back, I don’t think you’ll regret being overly cautious.

I have also been wrestling with the decision of when to keep my son home. As of Tuesday, though, all schools in our state will be closed, so I don’t have to worry about it for a few weeks. If you are in the US, that may soon be the case for you as well, because many states are making the call to close down schools.

Stay safe & good luck.

I am keeping my 13 year old son home. He gets Solaris infusions every 2 weeks(started in October of 2012). Luckily his school closed for 4 days next week so won’t be missing as much. Not sure how long he will be home. I spoke to his school and they completely support my decision.

Schools still all open in the UK, on the cusp of bringing our son home - but daughter still in school, so our family exposure would still be high. We are both as parents working from home though, so seems odd the children are not yet! Am erring on the side of him not going in tomorrow - but do we keep our well daughter home too?

Hope expert advice might come in soon - what strange times. Warmest wishes you all.

Hi Jess,

Thank you again for your question. Here is the response from the Expert Panel:

The Expert Panel cannot dispense advice on an individual case basis, especially regarding COVID19. This is because with C3G, the immune system is not appropriately regulated, and how this impacts a person with C3G if they get COVID19 is virtually impossible to predict. Also, there is not enough evidence from which to give specific advice.

However, C3G patients may be at risk for a more aggressive course of COVID19. It is reasonable , therefore, to minimize a patient’s exposure to other people, including keeping them out of school.

For all patients with C3G, we suggest consultation with their nephrologist as to the best steps to follow in this climate. We are suggesting to our patients that they engage in lots of good hand washing (at least 20 seconds) and adopt social distancing practices as best as possible, including avoiding non-essential travel, and non-essential exposure to any groups of 25 or more.
