Hi there, I have had tinnitus for 34 years,I can't remember life without it.Members of my family also have T and I often wonder is it genetic? I also went to a lot of loud rock concerts in my teens,I adore music, I find that now I can't listen to music very loudly as it makes my T worse.I get very embarrassed sometimes when i'm talking with people and I can't hear their voice,(I have had hearing test's and I have no hearing loss) I find it hard to explain to people that my hearing is fine, i have a wall of sound in my ears that acts as a block. a specialist told me 20 years ago that I have the worst T he had ever come across.Over the year's I have learnt to live with T it is part of me now.I like many many people though would love to find a cure.

I'd never heard of this condition before today, but is this something you're aware of?

34yrs w/ Mr T is one hell of a stretch. You have my utmost sympathy & respect.

My dad has T, I have T and my sister's oldest daughter has T. I believe there must be some type of "family thing" going on.

Hi KC1961, I am of that belief too, most of my mother's family have T , my son developed a mild form of T after working in a noisy factory,he's got an office job now.Does anyone know if there is research into this?

Hello and welcome to the British Tinnitus Association forum.

Do feel free to ask any questions, I hope that you find this a helpful and supportive place to help you manage your tinnitus.

There is some brand new research which shows that tinnitus may well have a genetic component, but how that is of practical use is a little way away yet I think - but you can find out more here: bit.ly/FrTinnG

We have some resources that you might like to check out in addition to our home here:
