At what stage of Cirrhosis of the liver is Ascites likely to occur?
This from the Cleveland Clinic -
"Ascites
Definition and Etiology
Ascites is defined as the accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. It is a common clinical finding, with various extraperitoneal and peritoneal causes, but it most often results from liver cirrhosis. The development of ascites in a cirrhotic patient generally heralds deterioration in clinical status and portends a poor prognosis."
However, the internet cannot give you a prognosis, only your Doctor/ Specialist can.
Thank you for reply Am3thyst.
I wanted to try and get this clear in my mind as I lost a close relative 6 days ago to liver failure, he was diagnosed with Ascites, we didn't live close and he kept the seriousness of his illness secret, I cannot digest the rapid deterioration of his health. He changed from slightly under weight to a skeleton in 4 months, why could nothing be done for him. He was only 52.
I am so sorry for your loss Marianne, it could be your relative not only kept the seriousness of his illness from you, but also from his doctors. My father in law was about 6' 3 and 18 to 20 stone, like you not living close we had'nt seen him for a while, when we did, he weighed less than 10 stone, and had been passing out, but refused medical help. He eventually agreed to go to the hospital as his GP had diagnosed him with diabetes, so on the Monday he went to get his blood checked, mentioned he had a lump on the roof of his mouth, he was admitted straight away and they started to do tests, one which was a dye going through his body so they could see what these lumps were, unfortunately, his body could not cope and had a massive heart attack that night. It was also found he had cancer, all this happened on the Monday, by the Wednesday, he was dead. My father in law was 55, had he got medical help a lot earlier, he would probably be alive today. Marianne, I personally have had enough of doctors, I am fed up knowing more about my illness, than they do!, but that's just me. Again, my condolences on your loss x
I had it for 6months before I went into a coma,and had a transplant 3days later.
