Morning guys advice please 🙏

Hi , I'm new to the group and just wanted to run something by you all, I've received a letter for my Hepatologist confirming that I am MELD 7 , wrongly or rightly I googled this and read that this Score gives an average of 2-12 years of life expectancy, I wanted to know how true this is and if anyone else has been told this? I was diagnosed with MASLD back in October last year and have lost 4 and a half stone , I have stopped drinking completely and I don't smoke, yet when I recently had another Fibroscan the readings had actually gone up rather than down , I eat really healthy pretty much 6 days out of 7 and have a cheat day and go to exercise classes and the gym I don't know how much more I can do to try and stop this disease from progressing? Some days are a massive struggle and I sometimes think what's the point I might as well just eat what I want as all this hard work isn't improving anything anyway , has anyone got any answers to help me please? Thank you in advance for any information that may help 🙏🥰

I can't comment on the specifics of your questions but I have long experience of turning around my own health and obesity and dealing with illness. One of the main things I have noticed is that progress is never linear. Also any type of scan is often dependent to some degree on the staff making the scans and the staff interpreting the scans. So a change in Fibroscan reading may be down to that. Maybe they found a slightly stiffer area of liver this time that was not scanned last time. Although it is demoralising to have a result that seems worse I don't think you can set much store by a single reading, especially if it is fairly similar to a previous reading. Not sure if that is the case.

In terms of the weight loss and healthy living - well done! Even if you are doing this primarily for the liver, please don't allow the liver issue to cloud any benefits you are reaping in your daily life. Perhaps you need to think about how things were and how you felt before you lost the weight. There must be physical things that are easier now.

One thing I found helped me a lot was to get rid of the concept of the cheat day. It is very easy to ruin progress with a cheat day unless you are good at managing yourself. Personally I try to take a view of what my overall weekly calories should be and then adjust on the fly. If I feel like a treat or am going out then I enjoy it fully, but made adjustments in advance or afterwards over the rest of the week to allow for it. I also try to make sure that I really do enjoy what should be a treat. When I tried cheat days I found myself mindlessly eating treats I did not particularly fancy, just because that was the day on which I allowed myself to have them. You may not find this at all, but I mention it in case it helps.

It sounds to me like you are doing really well overall, so congratulations. I am sorry the MELD score has scared you - maybe you could discuss this further with your consultant?

Thank you so much for your reply it has really helped me. You are right about the cheat day 100% I said to my husband I need to stop doing a cheat day , I am like a woman possessed on this particular day and have also found lately that it spills over to 2 days now which is not what I want at all. I am a person that has always loved food and continued to struggle since puberty with yo yo dieting , I am also the youngest of 5 children and all off my sister's and brother have had various cancers with one of my sister's passing away with Breast cancer, so being told that if I didn't sort my life style out it could go to cancer of the liver it has frightened me so much so made me lose the weight . I really do appreciate your comments and I will take them all on board , its nice to discuss things on here and also lovely that people spure you on , thank you again xxxx

Hello! I definitelly agree! No cheat day is A MUST! My liver didn’t begin to improve until I got rid of all of the bad things. First I realised I have a liver issue I improved some things but not all of them and my liver results were on and off bad for almost a year. Then I disposed of all of bad habits: no sugar, no alcohol…. and it took another 1.5year for my liver to take the corner and start improving. Unfortunatelly past two year I slacked again and the results went up the roof. So as i see it requires lifelong struggle with no lapses. It’s hard but it’s worth it😉

Morning MonicaThank you for the reply , I agree I've come to the point in my life where I think that is my only option, to just do the changes for 7 out of 7 days rather than 6 out of 7, 6 monthly scan is due in November so fingers crossed 🤞, hope you have a lovely day 🙏🥰

morning. Stop scaring yourself. Meld score is a measurement but nothing is 100%. 7 is low. If you want percentages lt would be 1.9% . They are good odds. You would not be considered for transplant. People are still living 20 plus years. You need to get your head around the disease and take charge. (You in control of it not it in control of you). If you doing everything right and don’t feel ill then keep doing whatever. You could get knocked over by a bus. Take the meds then get on with living a life not worrying about something out of your and other’s control. I know I seem harsh but this is what we need. Keep everything in perspective and live your best life. Good luck. Every one always wishes you the best, but only you can’t take the actions. Go for it my friend.

Thank you for your reply , you sound like my son, he says exactly the same literally word for word, you are completely right and I will take it on board, I've made such massive changes in my life since I was diagnosed in October, I really do need to be more positive and stop googling everything 🙄even the liver doctor has said that stressing about numbers is not good for the condition either. From now I'm going to try my best to move forward, stop stressing and live my life , thank you , I really appreciate your advice it's so easy to get bogged down with things isn't it. Onwards & upwards 🙏🥰

You can achieve whatever you set your mind to. You can either live a positive fulfilling life or a negative view which you can not move forward and be a mixed up mess. I’m stage 4 and my attitude is what will be will be accept and move on. Good days bad days but keep getting back up. Life is too short to worry yourself to death when you could be achieving every day. Some days washing dishes making bed and cooking a meal is a big achievement for me and I’m as happy as a pig in dodah. . I can only live in a positive way. Talk any time.
