Hyaluronic acid test anyone?

Hi there all,

Quick question - I've just discovered - been delving into my husband's medical notes and letters that he had a hyaluronic serum test just back in June.

This was because the liver doctor was bemused at his fibroscan result which she says showed no cirrhosis. Now, I know for a fact that every single discharge letter since Nov. 2022 when it was first diagnosed, has both ALD and cirrhosis mentioned in the diagnoses at top of letters.

There are roughly over a dozen of these letters.

I can't find the numbers for the fibroscan result, but this latest letter does say that the hyaluronic acid score is 137.5, which she says is above the normal range and so she is confident that he does have cirrhosis.

Does anyone know anything about this hyaluronic acid score as I can find nothing about it on the Liver Trust site at all. Maybe I'm not looking properly. It also makes me wonder about the accuracy of the fibroscan results as he says that this liver consultant had told him after the fibroscan result that he no longer had cirrhosis. This is on the back of 10 hospitalisations for massive variceal bleeds and 3 lots of sepsis, where every single doctor has said he has cirrhosis. Of course, I don't know whether she actually said the words to him that he doesn't have cirrhosis any longer or he thought he had heard that.

Very grateful if any of you knowledgeable folk can throw light on this please?

Thank you al so very much for your support and understanding.

This test seems to be part of a set of tests that constitute an ELF Test (Enhanced Liver Fibrosis Test). Gound this from NHS Leeds site "The HA assay is a component of the ELF test which is indicated, in conjunction with other laboratory findings and clinical assessments, as an aid in the diagnosis and assessment of the severity of liver fibrosis in patients with signs and symptoms of chronic liver disease."

Katie, you are just brilliant. Thank you so much. The learning curve with this disease is quite steep . This forum is a life-saver. Full of very kind and supportive folk.

Thanks again.
