Moving the bowels frequently is a must also keeping good well nourished state - loss of muscle mass increases ammonia levels. Less red meat but plenty protein. Good advice would be to see a liver specialist dietician to make sure he's eating appropriately. He also needs to keep very well hydrated.

Steer well clear of any so called 'natural' liver cleanses etc. as they can lead to more toxins for the liver to deal with,

* Hepatic Encephalopathy is a result of the liver not ridding the body of toxins leading to the build up of toxins/ammonia which can then cross the blood/brain barrier. HE itself doesn't cause the toxin build up.

Sadly my hubby has HE including having to be hospitalized (and now listed for t/p due to it).

He's on the regular medications for it - Lactulose, Rifaximin and recently added L'ornithine L'aspartate (LOLA).

I assume by natural you mean not the usual medications of Rifaximin/Lactulose? Obviously I'm not a Dr so can't give medical advice but im sure there's multiple studies saying that something like 2-4gs of L-Carnitine a day can bring elevated blood Ammonia levels down to normal. Though there's also some consensus that says HE is not related to blood levels of Ammonia at the same time. It's a safe and cheap supplement to use though so could be worth a try
